You can do all sorts of borders.
basically you quick mask the center & fill with black . swap selection then apply filters etc to give a custom/grunge border. Tutorial Similar to what I used for the pic borders when I created this poster. ![]()

For more traditional borders, just create a layer larger than the pic, move it to the back..
& then use your imagination... gradient fills etc.

That's very interesting. To think you have such a versatile tool like PS but that cannot do simple border functions. Instead, you need to manipulate canvas sizes... ![]() Thanks guys. Much appreciated! ![]()

I highlight the picture, open a new file that's 50 pixels larger, fill it with black, and copy/paste the pic there.
I'm probably doing it the long way. *shrug*

Looks great....
If you really want that floating look just change your background layer (the white) to the colour of where you will be posting. e.g. for same pic posted here grab a screen capture, save as jpg. then open it in PS use the eyedropper to pick the colour, then fill the background. The background will now be the same as the location where posting & the pic will appear to float.

I like that border Ian, did you do it with the glass filter, that's cool!

Here's a better step by step.... Grunge Border - Q = select Quick mask - M = Select marquee tool - Make border width selection center of picture - Fill center black (In quick mask, black conceals & white reveals.) - CTRL D = deselect - Apply distortion filter of choice (e.g. glass) - Q = exit Quick mask - Delete - CTRL D = deselect Done & as per previous ^post^ I filled edge with same background colour as 'Driver page. Wayne will recognize this pic ![]()

I use a programmed "action" I created so I can do it all with one button click. I've built different ones for different styles.
They're all a manipulation of layers and colored canvas sizes.

Wow, that looks amazing Daniel! Very well done.
I have PS3 on my desktop here at home (and even have Photoshop For Dummies), yet I still haven't taken the time to learn how to use this versatile application. I suck! ![]()
