Color pieces in B&W photography... how to write-up
If you already know how to do this, then this will be a boring little tutorial. But, maybe some other folks don't know how to do this and will find it interesting.
I did this for some guys over on another forum. I put it together reeeeeally quickly, so it's not the best in the world. But it should give you the idea of how to do it. I just copied and pasted the post. LOL Making a photograph black and white, but keeping some items in color. It's one of the easiest ps tricks out there. Give it a shot sometime. Simply create two layer copies. (ctrl j, for the shortcut) and then add a layer mask to the top one ("alt" and click *circle in square* -- bottom of the layers box, circled below--), and completely desaturate the second (middle) layer. Then take the paint brush, change it to white, and brush away where you want the color to show through from the top layer. Here's some screen shots. Excuse the rough tutorial, I'm late for work so I had to just pick something that was open already. This is from the Autocross yesterday. It has a bunch of random layer filters on it already, hence the colors being more artistic than editorial, but it will work. Initial picture: ![]() Open it, make two identical layers. Add the mask, and desaturate the middle layer. ![]() Then you erase the layer mask (if you erase too much, don't worry, you can always ADD mask back in by changing the brush color to black.) Don't flatten the image until RIGHT before you save it as a jpg. You can save it as a .psd and keep the layers if you want to work on it later. ![]() Final image. And now you have the true color of the car, on a b&w background. ![]()

nice write up for teh newbs.
usually, i'm not a fan of this sort of post processing, but sometimes it can turn out cool. when i was really into this stuff, i only used two layers. b&w on top, color on bottom. but for some reason, most people seem to go crazy with this pp technique.

I used to use the bottom two layers, but then I came to the realization that half the time I wish I had an "unmolested" layer... so I'll leave it alone in case I uber screw up.
And I agree, that most of the time this is a cheezy "wedding" effect. BUT, it has it's place, and alot of people have asked me how I do it. Specifically with this photo.... soooooooo... I share what little knowledge I have. ![]()

![]() ![]() To OP, there's many ways to do this, but you could cut out a few steps using your method. Open your image, copy that layer, desaturate the copied layer, now use the eraser tool to remove any B&W part to reveal the color from the original layer. |

You could. But how to you add back to it if you've erased too much?
I like the ability to switch colors on the brush and add back the layer mask in places I want. You also have the ability to drop the opacity of the brush and add/remove by "dusting" away the layer to get your desired effect. To me, the eraser is to "final."
