China & Darfur
An upcoming BBC programme will present evidence that China is helping Sudan's actions in Darfur. This includes supplying trucks & weapons after the embargo was imposed, and training fighter pilots who were sent to Darfur. The BBC article is posted below.
I'll be the first to admit that our country's hands are not clean when it comes to stuff like this, but I really have to wonder what the Chinese government is thinking. Securing energy sources is one thing, but facilitating the murder, rape, and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of people is just plain wrong. Its amazing to me that the international community is so scared of offending China by not attending parts of the Olympics while China is complicit in what's going on in Darfur in direct opposition to that same international community. :ThrowsHandsUpInDisgust: For anyone with access to BBC, the show will air on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 8:30pm in Britain (2:30pm EST; 11:30am PST). It will probably be available online as well. Quote:

^Have you ever read Mao: The Unknown Story? I realize that it's only based in Mao's reign as Chairman, but according to Jung Chang China performed all sorts of supporting acts similar to this Darfur situation.

As long as other countries can't guarantee that other nation wouldn't jump on the China's interest in Darfur, It's all fair game.
If China doesn't support the goverment and the government got replaced, China might lose the special interest it has in this country. In term of oil and diplomatic ties (aka another ally). Remember, it's more than supporting just one regime/country. Don't forget that many chinese are still poor. Having economic growth is way more important to China right now than talking/taking care of human's right. Afterall, if the so-called superpower wouldn't really bother with this issue, why should China? The idea is why bother taking care of other families while you are still not fully able to take care of your family. |

It's funny that we point fingers at China when we have been doing the same with Iraq throughout the 80s to fight and kill the Iranians as vengeance for kicking us out of Iran during their revolution. Now that we all have blood on our hands, is it any wonder that no one is doing anything to castigate the Chinese while our corporations and our government are beholden to them as the new economic teet to suckle on?

Our support for Iraq through the '80s has everything to do with opposition to the Aiyatollah and support for the Shah...why's that so bad, anyway? That regime's needed to go since it showed up. Bloody hands or otherwise...Iran's got to change, and has since late '78. Yeah, China's pretty shifty when it comes to their dealings with "unsavoury" nations. I work the China desk at a certain DC-area 3-letter agency and track this stuff. |

I would agree with you if we saw the Iranian situation in terms of what was best for America. If we turn the tables and see the situation from the average Iranian's perspective, the Shah was a totalitarian police state that murdered its political enemies and people and kept the majority of the population in poverty while supplying America with cheap oil and buying expensive American weapons to ratchet up an arms race in the region. Agree. The way the Chinese leadership is setup, they can turn their policies on a dime and make it happen in a matter of days what the U.S. Congress can't get done during an entire presidency. That's the price of democracy and freedom for ya and it has worked well for the last 200 years. As the hallmarks of the checks and balances within our government are slowly dismantled, I surmise that we will see a fall like Rome that no one will expect, but it will happen.
