troops coming home...
heard last night on cnn that bush has announced troop withdrawals...
units that were preparing to deploy were told to stand down. it seems this is the beginning of the end. (it may something to do with the general elections coming up - and the democratic & republican national conventions - who cares?)

Has everything to do with the republicans begging him to do something so they don't get slaughtered in November. Nothing more than positioning.

I believe the troop reductions will take us to pre-Surge levels. I remain skeptical as to how this will play out, but only time will tell.
My opinion is that sectarian differences will eventually override any progress made with U.S. intervention in the last 5 years. If such was to happen, Iran would get involved along with Israel to mitigate Iranian activities. Then I fear, we will be back there again as the International meat shield.

The troop reductions are required to re-enforce the concept the surge worked. Of course this happening prior to elections is a plus for McCain. The real question is what will the troop strength be at after the withdraw? To lend creditability it will have to be below pre-surge numbers to make an impression on the American people.
