Passport 8500 X50 hardwire remote install

First of all, I wanted to mount the remote in the ashtray, so I had to figure out how to get back in there. Turns out, that silver shift surround piece pops right off the center console, and the manual tranny shift **** spins right off (no clip)... no other interior pieces needed to be removed.

I figured out this much after taking apart the right side of the dash, then I could see how it all worked.

Anyway, mounted the detector up high, and the remote with double-sided sticky tape. Maybe a more permanent solution in the future, but works well for now. I might re-do the sticky tape with black - all I had was gray.

Isnt it recommended that the radar be mounted as low as possible for best laser protection??

i believe it's the opposite--the higher, the better for radar detection. perhaps laser detection may be different. if the cop is using laser, you're dead in the water either way because when the detector sees the laser, you've gotten tagged already.

Very nice.
Install a remote on/off switch in the tray so you won't have to fumble finding the thumb wheel, then flip the unit to the otherside of the rear view mirror so it's not in your field of view.

The only field of view it might block up there is of a 747 coming in for a landing...

Plus, I can reach the controls easier up there without being so obvious... although I can't remember ever messing with the controls... except the dim button at night.

Yep - detector up high for better radar detection, detector down low for better laser detection. Considering the fact that laser is pretty uncommon, plus the fact that as mentioned, once your hit, it's probably too late, anyway... I chose up high for better radar sensitivity. Plus, if you really want any countermeasure for laser, the jammers are the only devices that really help any.

Going shopping today for black double sided tape...
