Well it depends on what you want to surf. Are you going for a longboard, shortboard, or some type of retro? Are you a beginner? The size and shape of the board will depend on your size, ability and the type of wave your surfing.

I own a JS shortboard (from austrailia) and a retro single fin locally shaped. I like the variety because they both offer me a different feeling. The retro is easier to surf in small conditions and is more laid back, the short board is a lot easier to move and is mainly for performance surfing in chest high and larger conditions.

There are lots of great shapers out there and I'm sure there are some great local shapers in your area that make great boards for your local breaks. If your a beginner you might not want to spend much money. When I started I rode boards shaped by local shapers. I could get them for good prices and they were excelent boards for my local break.

^ yeah thats a good beginner board and shouldn't cost much. Longboards and funboards are good for beginners. I learned on a shortboard but I used to skateboard and wakeboard so I caught on fast. Other people are different.
