Tour de France time again (sigh, why do I do this to myself?)

With Floyd Landis officially stripped of his Tour title, Tom Boonen banned for an out-of-competition positive for cocaine, can this possibly be a clean and scandal-free Tour? Or am I completely deluded? On the positive side, we now have two American teams, and one of them even has a Canadian on it. I still like CSC and Carlos Sastre, but there are a number of riders who have great potential to win: Menchov, Evans, Valverde, and others.

Is anybody besides me even going to bother to follow this potential debacle?

Nice ride by Valverde to win the first stage.

Duenas Nevado, Ricco, Piepoli. What's the record for dismissals and team withdrawls in a single tour?
I don't really follow it closely, but I had the impression that '98 and '07 were the worst so far. Is this year's tour on pace with those?

Pretty far behind, i think, but the whole Saunier-Duval team is gone as will be Barloworld at the end of this Tour.

Seems to me it must be getting tougher to find sposorship money. Would you stick your neck out to put your name on any of those teams?

I met a couple of CSC riders earlier this year at Tour of California. Jens Voigt was very approachable and very friendly with fans. Great guy. and a great sportman.
Quote:
On mountainous stage 19, Voigt and Julich were in a 20-man break, but as Team CSC was leading the peloton to defend Basso's first place, Voigt and Julich did not work. Up the last climb, Voigt was alone with Spanish rider Juan Manuel Gárate, but as Voigt did not think he had done enough to deserve the victory, he let Garate take the win
After a brief chat between the front duo, with a pat on the back from Voigt and a handshake from Garate, superb sportsman Voigt didn't contest the sprint. Garate went and just before the finish, he turned back and pointed to Voigt to thank him for the win.

I'm rooting for him to win a stage and for CSC team.

On the other hand, Levi seemed cold. I saw him cycled by and ignored the fans "hello" and "Go Levi" ignoring pretty much everybody. This was post race so there was no need for "being in the zone". I'm not sorry he wasn't allowed to ride.

I used to love this event. Not anymore. Like so many other sports, you can't tell if the athlete or the chemicals in the athlete are delivering the winning performance.

On my trip through the mountains yesterday there were several bikers on the road, and I couldn't help but admire the determination it must take to drive themselves through the hills - not to mention the cast iron sack to go flying down the other side.

I'm very jelaous, Jens is by far my favourite rider, on my favourite team, riding my favourite bike brand - Cervelo, which is a Canadian company (though the bikes are now made in China).

Bob, I agree that it's hard to watch and not wonder if every winner is a cheat. When Ricco and Piepoli rode away from everyone, I wondered even then.

Usual - would I sponsor any of these teams? NFW, too risky.

CSC is going strong. Yellow jersey and first in team standing.

Yup, looking good. Alpe d'Huez today should tell the tale. They need to crack Evans and Menchov.

Now we only await the Race of Truth on Saturday to see if Evans can time trial more than 1:34 faster than Sastre. I hope not.
