Olympic medal count

Does anyone else find the fascination in medal count kinda...stupid? Is that really the primary point of the olympics, to track which country is winning the most medals? Man, the top story is always "the US medal count is..."

Who cares? I'd rather hear interesting stories about the events themselves, and the athletes involved. Maybe it's just me...

^I love it.

I'm currently in Beijing and I plan to rub it in my friend's face the whole time I'm here. (She's the one who started it though. She claimed that China will take the total medal count this year.)

But Beijing sucks. Michael Phelps (sp?) just won gold and broke the WR in the 400 and they cut the anthem half way through!

Keeping track of the medal Its kind of like a friendly "war game"of sorts, like the world cup.

For me the tracking is interesting but shouldn't be the lead. I'd rather hear about individual athletes, the events, world records etc.

Agreed, it's yet another number for the stats-crazed Americans.

Both the internet and television talk about the athletes, their stories and world records.
