Oil Change

So I've decided that I am tired of being violated by jiffy lube every time I need to get my oil changed ($79.99 each time?! WTF!) and have decided to do it myself. I've been running synthetic in her the past 3 or so changes. Any recommendations on types of oil and weight. I was just going to go with a 5W-30 since winter is coming up, though is that really necessary down here (moved from South West VA if you couldnt guess from my user name, so i've always ran 5W-30 in the winter and 10-W30 in the summer). I run castrol GTX high mileage in my 3000GT religiously, but have no experience in the world of synthetics, so i'd like a starting point if anyone has anything they prefer (probably doesnt matter as much on this car since its low miles... any oil will likely be fine, but curious as to preference/if anyone has noticed if they're car runs better on a particular brand.

Also, seeing as i've never changed the oil in this car before by myself... how hard is it? I have a floor jack (but since jacking the front end up tilts the oil pan backwards, I would prefer to not do that), but will likely be doing this in my apartment complex parking garage on the roof. In the past what i've done with my 3000GT (which i'm fairly certain is lower than the G) has been drive it up onto the grass and hang the front out over the curb. I don't have any curb options in my complex's garage, but worst comes to worse there is the decline where the parking garage goes down a floor, and i could park it on that slant, block the tires, put her in gear, and jack the front up so the car would effectively be sitting level. I've also done the 3000GT without the curb before, but its a pain in the rear... long story short, anyone have any tricks for reaching under there/is there enough space that i can do it without some sort of artifical lift

Anyway sorry that was so long winded... thoughts?

Since you have a floor jack, you could invest in jack stands (which you should always use if you're jacking/getting under the car anyway) and do it that way. If you're ****-retentive about being level, buy four stands and jack both ends. After that, it's easy and you should be able to find a DIY easily.

FWIW I use Amsoil 0W30 Signature, a true synthetic and good for at least 7500 mile change intervals.

Wowoeee that is a ton of information on oil in once convenient location. Thanks for the link.

Ya i've got 1 set of jack stands, but i suppose another wouldnt be a bad investment. Thats probably how i'll end up doing it if i can't straight up reach under the car and get to everything, which im guessing is unlikely

oil change is easy. or should be at least. according to the owner's handbook, the filter is down by the oil pan on the passenger side. so jack up the car from the front, secure with parking blocks and jack stands. unscrew oil cap to relieve pressure. place a drain pan under the oil pan to collect the old oil. drain oil, remove old filter. once old oil is completely drained, install new filter and replace drain plug, lower car and top off with 5qts of new oil. start engine and let idle for ~5-10 minutes and you're set.

normally what I would do is take another quart of oil and pour it into the engine while it's draining to pick up any other old oil left behind.

This oil change, I'll be using Mobil1 5w-30 synthetic oil with a matching Mobil1 M1-108 oil filter. Advance Auto Parts is having a sale on 5qts of Castrol Synthetic + Purolator filter for $25. $2 more gets you a gold filter I believe.
