Italy

So I have my next few years mapped out of where I want to travel to and one of the places I am going to is Italy in spring of 2010. I've never been to Italy before, but have been doing lots of research on the internet. This is one of my dream places to visit so I want to make sure I do it right.

My wife and daughter plan on going for 1 month and I hope to see a good portion of Italy without it being nonstop on the go....if that's possible. My main places that I want to visit are Venice, Florence, Amalfi Coast and the entire Tuscany province, Rome, and Palermo. There are a few more, but those are the main places I want to visit. From what I have researched, the Amalfi Coast and Tuscany in general is where I want to spend most of my time. I definitely want to spend a few days on a vineyard in Tuscany......that is a must for me.

So, having never been there before, I have heard that Italy is rather expensive for lodging, food, and transportation. I've been to Portugal and Spain a couple of times, but everything is very cheap there, so I really don't know how Italy compares.

For those that have been there before, would $15k-20k be enough for one month for my wife and I and my daughter (who will be 3 years old at the time)? This would include basically everything. I'd just like to have an idea of what I will need to have set aside for this trip. Any help would be appreciated.

I lived in Sicily for 2 years, and been to Naples and Rome, Spain and the island of Maredia (Portugal), and to me the prices are about the same. I don't know how you think Europe is cheap, when a 330 ml can of Coca-Cola cost 1 euro. (I think 3 euro from a street vendor in Rome). A 12 Fluid Ouin can of Coca-Cost cost $0.75 here in the US. ( 1 Euro = $1.47 USD).

Also if you plan on renting a car, Know the Gas is KILLER!!!

I spent a week in Italy on a college's student budget, so I don't know how much my opinion means. I would think with a $20,000 budget you could rent a small villa in Tuscana for the month and branch out from there. I looked a couple of years ago and they were in the range $2000 a week during summer time. July and August are the most expensive time to travel in Italy.

I only hit the big cities when I was there. I want to go back to explore some of the smaller cities like Sienna and Sam Gimignano.

I didn't actually say Europe was cheap, I just said that I thought Portugal and Spain were very cheap, namely Portugal. I don't drink pop so I don't know how much it costs there, but the average beer in Portugal cost me about $.30 cents, bottle of wine about $2, and a half litre bottle of water was $.08 cents.....all in euros of course. To me, that's very cheap. I have heard that everything in Italy is much more expensive, however I am only going from what I've heard since I've never been there.

I just got back from Amsterdam, Its not as expensive as Italy but it hurts my wallet none the less!
some things I noticed
1) they charge 30 cent euro for ketchup or mayo at the fastfood chains there
2) breakfast buffet at my hotel was 25 euro
3) dinner buffet at my hotel was 59 euro
This is Average buffet that would cost about 15 bucks in the States
My hotel wasnt high class or anything, something along the lines of Mariott

Id hate to think how much things would be in Italy

I just used the Coca-Cola as a example , but man those prices are super cheap. Don't expect that in Rome, or Naples. I remember prices like 4-5 euro for a bottle of beer, (Not sure for wine), and at least 1 euro for a 1/2 liter of water.

When you are there try a real panini sandwich, a blood orange or blood orange juice, and Gelato (Italian IceCream)

Well you're looking at around $500 a day. Hotel for the three of you should be about 250 a day for a decent one. I think it will cover you, but I haven't included airfare yet.

$15K is more than enough Shane as long as you plan ahead. This way you can save on food and lodging. Don't eat out to much what I did when I was there was I shopped at the local supermarket (way cheaper). If you can get lodging that has a kitchen it will help save a lot on budget. Don't ever miss Venice that is my fave city when I went. Try visiting Como de Lago (Lake Como) and don't forget to wave at George Clonney while he is having breakfast on his patio. LOL! Also a place to visit while there is the Ferrari factory in Maranello made tears come out of my eyes. Costa de Amalfi, Tuscany also a must visit wine is cheaper than cola. Another suggestion is visit France Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Monte Carlo all are only a few minutes away from each other. Nice drive by the coast remember to take plenty of pics along the way.

BTW Shane the wife and I are scheduled to go to Madrid and Portugal in May of this year. Hoping to visit Amsterdam as well so I'm looking forward to my vacation as well.

Awesome, thanks for the info Glenn. I know that this trip is still 2 years away, but I like to plan and prepare well ahead of time. I have a pretty good idea of the areas that I want to cover during the 4 weeks, and your suggestions are pretty much all on my list.

My wife and I will certainly eat out at restaurants some, however I definitely want to pick up our own meals locally at a grocery store for the most part. I am not sure yet what type of accommodations that we'll stay in, however we are pretty open at this point. As far as transportation, I am thinking of renting a car outside of the major cities and take public transportation when in the cities.

Btw, that's great that you are headed to Portugal/Spain in May. What places in Portugal are you planning on visiting? I can give you some suggestions if you like.

Tha would be awesome if you can suggest a few places to visit in Spain and Portugal. I know that we will be staying in Madrid for a few days they travel by train to Portugal stay 2 days in Fatimah. The we go back to Madrid and fly to Stuttgart few days there and then off to Paris before going back home. I think the trip is about 15 days the way we planned it. I'm looking forward to my vacation in fact I can't wait for it.

Fatima is about an hour away from Lisbon and 2 hours from Porto, so you'll have lots of choices for places to see. Lisbon is a beautiful city and would recommend it. I would also highly recommend the surrounding areas of Lisbon such as the Estoril coast, Cascais, and Sintra. Sintra is such a beautiful little town located in the mountains outside of Lisbon. Porto is another extremely beautiful city that I would recommend you visit.

Are you planning on going into the Algarve in southern Portugal? the beaches are beautiful there. Let me know if you are going to that province and I can recommend a bunch of places to see. Some other places that I would recommend visiting are Beja, Evora, Coimbra, and Serpa. If you haven't been to Seville before, I think that would be a must see as well.
