Where to go on vacation (tropical) for $4,000?

I'm looking for ideas for a tropical vacation somewhere for less than $4,000 (for 2 people). I've done St. Lucia, Jamaica, Bahamas, just looking for other ideas out there. I'm considering Hawaii this year, but I'm looking for other ideas as well.

So serve em up, where ya been that you can recommend?

Very true, but the flights alone are close to $3K of the $4k budget.

If you haven't been to Hawaii, just do it!

I have been to Oahu three times, now I want to see the big island.

Two of the trips to Oahu, I spent less than $350.00 for a round trip ticket.

In the past 2 years, I've been to nearly 20 different Carribean destinations (work) and the islands are all starting to look the same. Granted, I'm a bit jaded at this point and just assume stay home but Cartagena is an absolutely beautiful city! If you can speak a little bit of Spanish, I highly suggest it.

I'm on the east coast (Richmond, VA). I'm thinking Hawaii, plus I could get there on frequent flier miles, freeing up more $$$ to enjoy the area. Any recommendations for lodging of a place that nice, but not overly expensive? I'm not dependent on some big chain, but the wife won't be happy unless the place is pretty decent. I was there about 20 years ago but needless to say, things are probably different than they were back then.

Go on a royal caribbean cruise! Best bang for the buck and cruises are simply amazing! If i had more time off of school i would go probably every other month. I have been on countless cruises and never had a bad experience.

Royal caribbean FTMFW! Here are a couple nice cruises.

Do you know anyone there? They can get you a "Locals" rate.

If not, I would look into Cheapticket.com or something similar.

I'd love to do a cruise but my wife, for whatever reason, would rather jab a hot poker in her eye. I don't know anybody out there any longer (he died). Hadn't considered Guatemala, I'll have to look into it.

IMHO, cruises are okay... I took one for 16 days landing at several spots in the Carribean, but I can see me taking more cruises once I get on my Rascal... but when you're young and still able to do land expeditions, save the cruises for when you cannot.
