Road Trip to San Diego!

So I'm trying to take a roadtrip to san diego from norcal (near SF) are there any good stops on the way that you would recommend stopping? I am 17 and will be traveling with 1 of my friends who is 18 and maybe a couple other people. Also, where are some good deals to stay in the San Diego area? And restaurants that aren't toooo pricey

idk ahha haven't even thought about which way to go.. which one is more scenic, or better for kids at least? Should i drive all the way there in one shot, stopping for food and bathroom? or spend the night somewhere on the way?

I would suggest 101 as far as scenic goes. The only thing is it might take longer, I've never done that trip on the 5 so I'm not sure how fast it is. I have gone from here south on the 5 and not much to see. There are rest stops on both, 101 has beach areas along the way to stop, maybe stay between here and Santa Barbara. When are you going? If it's this weekend your screwed for a hotel. When I go to San Diego it takes a good 4-5 hrs if it's on a Friday night. My husband went a couple weeks ago on a Monday night for the US Open and he made it in 4hrs. no traffic. So from where your at I say 8-9 hrs. with stops?

You should be fine on hotels then if you decide to stop for a night.

Hey Elayman! I'm in L.A. right now.... Lisa's right, take the 101... it's GORGEOUS! I prefer the 101 than the 5. It's only another 30 miles further, but, oh, so worth it. Love the Cali coast.

Try this site: yelp.com
type in the city and what you're looking for and it'll give you all of the restaurants and hotels, etc, straight from regular people like us.

Drive safe, watch out for idiot drivers out there... the drivers are nicer down here than in Northern Cali.... yeah, believe it or not. Lock your doors and don't stare @ anybody.

Geri,
when are you heading home? maybe if you need a little break and I'm back we can meet in Pismo for a quick cup of coffee. Pm me.
Lisa

Elayman,
If you decide to stop in my area pm me and I can give you a couple hotel names that are reasonable, some of them around here are outrageous this time of year.
Lisa

is there any way I can get one for under $60? I wanted to stay longer than like 2 days lol but with gas running me somewhere near $300 or so for about a week, and hotels at $70+ a night idk if I can afford it.. Would camping out at a campsite be better? Idk where one is but I could set up a tent and it's like $5 a night up here

We have a couple hotels that I'm sure you can get for that or less. It also depends what night of the week you will be staying, mid week is always a little less. I'm going out of town this weekend but if you pm me a better idea of days and how many/what size bed, etc. I can check for you early next week. I won't be very busy next week. I can check the camping too, the campsites around here are full quicker than the hotels because of the dunes.

Okay thanks a lot. It will probably be 3-4 people so 2 beds will be fine. Is there any way to reserve the camping areas before we go? I'm looking for the cheapest route so 1 stars are fine

There are only a couple camping areas. Pismo Coast Village 805-773-1811, Avila Hot Springs RV Resort 805-595-2114, Pacific Dunes 805-489-7787, Sand & Surf 805-489-2384. you might be able to check these online.

If you have time, I would suggest doing highway 1 all the way down to san luis obispo.. and hang out at pismo beach for a bit before hitting santa barbara on your way to sd.. but that's like an entire day's trip.. and make sure your passengers do not have motion sickness.. because it is pretty steep and windy but the view is breathtaking..

or if you're short on time take 101 down and then head to monterey then hop on the 1 from there
