When in...

I'd like to start a thread that features your experience on places that you'd visited to help some of the folks in here.

When in Tokyo:

Go see a Sumo wrestling match. I find this sport fascinating because of the large-sized men wrestling. But it's a match that combines technique, speed, intellect and of course, weight. I witnessed a smaller guy beat the defending champ who was much bigger than him. There are 6 grand tournaments per year January, May and September and I saw it at Kukogikan (sp?). The event starts around 10am when the younger, less experienced Sumos starts early in the morning and experienced, weight and rank progresses throughout the day. The events, I'm told lasts 15 days. Be sure to get their inexpesive souvenir which is called the Banzuke (sp?) which is a list of all of the wrestlers from bottom to top. Be sure to stay for the ending ceremony (and it's also respectful) which they show to get rid of the negative energy from the losers.

Go to the Ginza shopping center

Go to Shinjiku Subnade (sp?) for some underground shopping

As a lover of history, be sure to visit the Edo-Tokyo museum. Tokyo was once called Edo which was once a political center of Japan.

There are many castles (and former locations of castles) in Japan and I wish I had time to visit all of them.

There are also great places to eat in Japan, which I can't remember the names. Expect to eat "non-Americanized" sushi and Japanese cuisine and much smaller portions. There were great noodles houses as well, which again, non-Americanized and actually, healthier than that of our Americanized Japanese cuisine.

There are a lot of ex-pats in Japan and a lot of English speaking Japanese. The Japanese culture is mostly about respect. Be sure to learn about the Japanese culture prior to going to Japan. What we, as Americans may consider acceptable may not be in the Japanese culture.

AWESOME idea for a thread Gerry!!

I'm sure I'll be posting a few times in this thread, but I'll start with the Mayan Riviera. I've been there a few times and got married there as well. When in the Mayan Riviera go to;

Chichen Itza and Tulum.
I've always been fascinated with the Mayan civilization and going to see the ruins was an awesome experience for me.

Xcaret & Xel-ha. This is an amazing place to go if you are a water person. Swim with dolphins in a beautiful lagoon, aquarium, scuba diving, snorkeling, underground rivers, etc.

Swimming in the Cenotes
. Amazing experience, nothing else needs to be said.

Senor Frogs, Playa Del Carmen. Senor Frogs in PDC is located right on the water by the Marina, it's such a great atmosphere there. A great place to have a few Coronas and awesome nachos and salsa.

When in IRAQ...

You'll want to avoid crowded streets, they could possibly be a doozy...

Make sure you see some of the Sadaam ruins, it's great to be part of history!

Baghdad isn't the only place to see... Mosul, Balad, and Kirkuk are all places worth visiting.

Remember guys, the cradle of civilization is here! You'll want to see the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They are the two rivers that create the fertile land known as Mesopatamia.

^^It's a shame that the museums were one of the first buildings looted after Saddam fell. So tragic.

When in Amsterdam, go see a sex show. Enjoy it, you'll have fun. And go to a coffee shop with friends. That stuff is POTENT. Remember your sunglasses.

When in Paris, see the Eiffel Tower. Fvck it, every tourist does, but definitely take a ride up. It's one of those things to do before you die. Then find a bar and drink with the locals. Your impression of Parisians will drastically change. I recommend Kronenburg beer.

When in Munich, you should visit Dachau. No one puts going to a concentration camp high on their list of things to do, but do it anyway. You will walk away a better person, I guarantee it. See the documentary if you don't know $hit about the Holocaust, otherwise, skip the documentary and visit the whole camp. You will mourn and realize that humanity is a very precious thing. Then go to the Hofbrauhaus. The oldest beer house in Munich, like 5 centuries old. Have a stein of beer and have a great time.

Come to think of it, whenever you go to any foreign city, don't go to the Americanized restaurants or commercial chains. Find a bar that looks like Mom and Pop owns it, go to it, and have a beer. You'll be surprised to see what conversations can start.

When in Boston, go to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Love that place.

When in San Francisco, you must visit the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the most magnificent in all the world. Then check out the crazies around market street.

What about the bullet train?

Also, you should watch the sumo guys stretch. It's amazing to see 300 pounders be so flexible.

When in Portugal........(warning, this could be a lengthy post).

Go to Lisbon and check out the Belem Tower, Geronimos Monestary, Statue of the Navigators, and the Castle of Sao Jorge.

Go to Sintra, which is just outside of Lisbon. When in Sintra, it's a must to go see the Pena Palace and Castelo dos Mouros.

Go to Lagos for the beautiful beaches and rock formations.

Go so Cape St. Vincinte, which was thought to be the end of the world hundreds of years ago. The cliffs are breathtaking.

Go to Fisherman's Beach in Albufeira. Fisherman's Beach is probably the most scenic and beautiful beaches I've been to.

Go to Silves and check out the Castle that was built in the 4th/5th century.

Go to Evora and see the Roman ruins and large aqueduct.

Go to Monchique, which is a beautiful village in the Mountains. Spectacular views to say the least.

And last but not least, make sure you sample one of Portugal's specialties, grilled sardines. And you got wash it down with a bottle of Portuguese wine.

I could go on and on with other beautiful places to go and see in Portugal, but I didn't want to make this post any longer than it already is.

I thought about you ^^ last Saturday. We went to a local vineyard with a tasting room/ bed and breakfast built in Spanish style with a guy outside playing Flamenco music. My D40x is getting repaired, so no pics until the next visit.

When in Spain..........

While I haven't traveled as extensively in Spain as I have in Portugal, there are still a few must see places that I would recommend.

Sevilla. Sevilla is probably the most beautiful city I've been to (with Lisbon a close second). I was so awestruck with this city that my daughter's middle name is Sevilla. Some must sees in the city are the following.

The Cathedral, also known as Catedral de Santa Marķa de la Sede. This Cathedral is the largest Roman Catholic and Gothic Cathedral in the world. Seeing this structure absolutely blew my mind. The amazing detail and shear size of this building is just incredible. Construction of this Cathedral began in the 1400s.

Plaza De Espana & Maria Luiza Park in Seville. This is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Plaza De Espana was actually featured in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.

Seville Shopping District. Downtown Sevilla is just beautiful. Lots of great shopping, amazing architecture, and just a great place to relax and have some Tapas with a drink.

Algeciras. This is a beautiful little port city in Southern Spain overlooking Gibralter and the North African coast.
