Phone Service, international.

What do you guys and Gals do when you are traveling outside of the US.

I 've heard you can buy or rent phones at the airport o if you have an unlocked phone just buy a sim card?

May be traveling to England and was wondering if I can have my calls directed from my cel (or office) to the international # or what is the most convenient?

All I can say is do extensive research to find out what coverage you have where you're going to be. My sister went to Germany and took an international Verizon phone with her. Fvckers charged her $1.25 a minute without her knowing. Apparently Germany is on the list of countries that is included in your more expensive monthly international plan but not the outskirts of Berlin where she was staying. Whiskey tango foxtrot? Best bet is to get a burner - a prepaid phone. Don't get it at the airport, too expensive. If you want a number, set up Skype. It's a low monthly fee ($10 maybe?) and it'll forward to your phone when you can't be at the computer. My friend's been in Europe for over a year with a NJ number I can call him at.

Hi Mextep,

From my experience, if your phone is 2-3 years old, more likely you have a global chip in your phone, however, you do need to contact your phone provider to ensure that you have international roaming. You'll only be charged when you use it while you're abroad. The only 2 countries our phone here in the USA will not work in are Japan and Korea. They have a different system than we do. Renting phones in those 2 countries are costly. But it is worth it.

From what I understand, Verizon now has the global phone which will work in the 2 countries. AT&T was supposed to come out with a similar phone last Nov 2007, but it's been postponed till Dec 2008.

Good luck and have fun!

Its not a different system. Its a different frequency. 900 and 1800 I believe where as we use 850 and 1900. If you have a CDMA or TDMA type phone then you have to talk to ur provider and figure out if it will work overseas.

If you have a GSM phone just check on the box if its Quad Band and it will work, both ATT and Tmobile have had them for yrs. As far as the rates yeah it will prob be pricey. Even with an intl' plan expect to pay .50-1.25 per minute. Intl' txt runs about .15-.25

Renting a phone there its good to call cabs, the hotel, relatives in the country etc. But it will prob cost just as much if not more to call back to the US and people calling you from here will also pay an arm an a leg. Beware that most cell phone companies will charge you per minute intl' rate if you have your calls forwarded to an intl' number, so make sure to check with them.

As others have said, I have a quad-band phone (iPhone), and set up my AT&T account so it works overseas. Note though, that it's EXPENSIVE to make calls (like a $1-2 per minute...).

Also, if you download a lot of info (e-mails etc.), check your plan for download rates. For example, in the US the iPhone plan comes with unlimited data; during a recent trip to Brazil, I was charged $.02 / kB, which came to something like $250 for 13MB (count 'em, 13... ) Fortunately, the company pays.

I don't know the details... my company gives me a phone and I'm lucky it's free for me. I also borrow phones from our Korea and Japan offices which saves me a lot of money. I was told by our telecommunications department that my global phone (we have AT&T) should be here by the end of this year. I was just telling Mextep the 2 companies with one currently has the global phone. But in the meantime, when I go to Korea and Japan, I have to borrow their phones.

you can actually buy a UK pre-paid sim online and have it shipped to you here before you leave. That's what I did, now every time I go, I just go onto t-mobile.co.uk before I leave, add some money onto my sim and I'm done.

unlocked quadband phone, use local prepaid sim card.

Kernel's idea of UK tmobile prepaid sim sounds perfect.

I have SPRINT. When we went to France last year, I called and rented a phone through SPRINT. They sent a SIM card with my local # and a RAZR V3. The bad thing was that when people tried calling my personal phone, it went straight to me! I don't remember how many calls I got at 2-3 in the morning. Most people didn't even know I was out of the country.

what i do when i go to europe is, i have a vodafone sim card (10euro) and i just get top up minutes for it, then just have you calls fowarded to that number

only works if your phone is GSM and its unlocked, just call your phone company and tell them you are traveling and you need it unlocked and they will unlock it

unless you have an iphone, then you can do some ninja chit (pwnage tool) and unlock it your self
