Vancouver / Whistler, BC

Has anyone been through Vancouver? Places to go and see? Also, if anyone knows, whats the best way to get from Vancouver to Whistler? There's all kinds of busses and car rentals available I just have no idea whats the best.
Thanks

I live in Van - best way from Van to Whistler is by car - its about 90 min drive and is very scenic - right now because of the 2010 olympics (road constuction) you would hit traffic, road delays etc - but if your planning on coming up for 2010 olympics highway will be complete - car rentals are everywhere, ,my favorite rental company here is hertz and I use there prestige collection -they rent M35s..
You could take the bus which is prob cheaper, but car would be more fun..
As far as what to see there is lots - what month/year are you coming??

Good info thanks -- In Whistler, it looks like in Dec. it costs $17 a day to park at our Hotel. PLUS i'm not exactly the best at driving in snowy conditions. We're getting into YVR at 4pm I think...would like to get to Whistler as soon as possible. Buses do look cheaper but its almost 3 hrs that way. I'm not sure which method to go, it'd be nice to have my own transpo though.

The bus might be better if your not too familiar with snow driving - needing a car in whistler is like needing a car in Vegas - not nec, but its nice..how long are you staying for?? what hotel did you choose for whistler?? my favorite hotel there is the sundial boutique hotel
http://www.sundialhotel.com/ - its right in the village - whistler high season is december - by far the most expensive time to go - but prob the best time as well - its hit or miss for snow driving in dec the village will def have snow on the roads but the ride up on the highway its hit or miss - we probably have snow 5 to 10 of 31 days in december - whistler village has it everyday basically

- are you coming to Vancouver to stay or just Whistler??

Dude thats EXACTLY where we booked...the Sundial. We'll be there December 08..We're going to be there 7 days 6 nights. The hotel said to take Premire Bus Lines, they're about 120 per person round trip I think. Not too bad compared to renting a car, I heard Snowbus is good if your 15 and want a rowdy a$$ bus ride up there...but they are a hell of alot cheaper for some reason. Any good suggestions for whistler regarding anything? I'm hoping the Peak to Peak Gondola will be open...

Thats killr.. ya that hotel is good, its a boutique hotel so they seem to care about there guests more - if you can afford it, the hot tub rooms have private hot tubs on balcony over looking village - either way there other rooms are great too and location is perfect - supr central.. I think the peak to peak gondola is open in dec - so should be perfect --- as far as things to do Whistler, it isnt very big, if you were coming to Vancouver to stay I could go on and on, but Whistler is for the most part a small village packed with restaurants, clubs, shopping, bars etc etc if you need to find anything ask the hotel -mostly everything is good - one of my favorite restaurants is KYPRIAKI NORTE - its greek and I usually dont like greek, but this one is amazing - great atmos..otherwize the Umberto restaurants are good but $$$ - party scene is kool, but has that Mountain ski vibe thing to it - not sure how old you are, but if your coming to party you should plan a night in Van - much bettr - otherwize sounds like you've booked an awsome ski vacation - let me knw if ya need more info...

As a non local, I've made Whistler my annual snowboard getaway for the past couple of years. Like Chevis mentioned, the drive up is GORGEOUS!! He can probably tell you a lot better than I can tjat the highway is extremely well maintained and looked after, even in blizzards. BUT... and a HUGE but, is that you really don't want to be driving up there in a blizzard. With all the construction going on, they've altered traffic patterns like crazy. I'm not sure if it's a Canadian thing, but the way they diverted traffic up there last time I went was ridiculous.... and I'm from Jersey! Super confusing... especially when driving at night. There are no street lights, so you have to rely on the cars headlights to see where you are going.

That's something you should consider based on what time you are arriving. Yes, the drive is scenic, but will you be driving at night? It's seems that you will be, based on your arrival time and if you plan to check out Vancouver for a bit before heading up. All that being said, I'd never take the bus unless I was traveling alone.

It depends. In terms of size and variable terrain, then yeah. But good powder depends a lot on mother nature.

Two years ago, we had chest deep powder for 7 straight days. HEAVEN!

Last time I went, conditions ranged from awesome to awful. Whistler would be completely iced over, but then inside Blackcomb glacier, there was a blizzard with two feet of fresh powder. We went back the very next day and all that powder was frozen over and we were left with rock hard canyons from our previous day's tracks.

All things considered... I'm already planning my upcoming winter trip to Whistler!

Cool man thanks for all the tips. We'll probably just catch a bus up there because of the time of day and also the convienence factor of not getting caught in a storm myself. I'm hoping there will be some good powder while we're there, any idea on how the snowboard rental situation is up there? It's too much of a hassle to bring all our own stuff and even now at the airport they charge you extra for multiple bags and heavy crap.

Most airlines only allow you to check-in two bags and will charge extra for larger, odd shaped bags. However, they allow you to substitute one of your "allowed" bags for snowboard, ski, golf bags, even if they are large and odd sized. Too many people travel for recreation so they will allow it without extra cost.

I have a regular snowboard bag, but my friend bought this monstrosity of a thing. It's like the size of an alligator and literally looks like one. They wanted to charge him for it, but once he said it was a snowboard bag, they allowed it. So I really don't think you should have any problems unless the airline you are flying went super stingy recently.

I've never rented up there, but I hear the prices are very reasonable.
