are you asking if the UTEC system is expensive itself? Or if shops charge alot to do a utec tune?
Normal tunes from a shop are around $400-500 to tune. And you have to buy one first which you can probably find a used one for around $600. GL If you want to tune yourself then go ahead, it's fairly basic to learn depending on how much you know/willing to learn about engines and unless you drive like an idiot and get on it all the time with a bad tune then of course you will blow your motor quickly. |

Utec can be programmed by the end user, so technically you can tune it for free.
If you take it to a shop, most likely the shop will be hesitant to tune something through hyperterminal (and I don't blame them) so they may charge a bit more then they would if you had an ECU with a GUI (like the Utec should have). I remember when I was showing my mechanic my Utec interface he couldn't believe I went "cheap" on my engine managment after spending so much on the car!

~$400-500 is a good guess for a UTEC tune.
If you can get a baseline example tune from someone for the tuner to start with it will save you a lot of time and money. I know TurboXS has a few on their site.
