OP dude awesome! I'm heavily considering this,
has anyone else out there tried using OP's directions?

OP you need to set yourself up a shop. . .I'd
pay ya decent money for this!

Will this work on a G35x that has no options other than sunroof?

In other words, does this external GPS solution require the G35 Premium or Technology Package?

I'm not experienced with car audio,
so I'm going to have to find a Philadelphia area installer to do the work.

Also, is there a way to update the data (maps) on this system?
How long will Garmin support this unit with updates? (maps and firmware)

Thanks again for posting this information.

The Garmin portables work great with no other add ons.
I have had my Garmin c330 for 3 years and they still send me updates via my computer. You then upload the updates from your computer to your Garmin. real easy, just register it online when you get it so they can send you the updates.

Thanks for the info.

But, I wonder how you update the "black box" style Garmin and if Garmin offers the same updates for them?

Also, can you do the same upgrade that the OP has done with a base G35x without the premium package?

The black box Garmin has a slot for an SD card. You download the new software to the card. Works fine.
If the non premium car has AV inputs (I'm sure it has) then this should work just fine. Some wire locations for required modifications may be different but I'm sure it's similar.

Here is a question to everyone:

Can we input mutliple soucres through the same RCA inputs in the G35console?

In other words,
can we run both the audio from an i-pod AND the audio from the NAV at the SAME time?

If not,
is there a way to set up a selectable "switch" to toggle between inputs so we don't have to unplug and re-plug everytime you have to change inputs?

Thanks.

The TomTom has an ipod input so that it plays your tunes and then announces turns, etc by reducing the volume of your music. Other than that, I don't have an answer for you

You have one input and it's not switched, so you have to do your switching before you get to the inputs, probably using some distribution box.

If you do have nav and you just plug in an ipod or something, the nav will send the radio mute signal to the radio and override the music, so that you get the nav directions on top of whatever input you have on.

But if you don't have nav, it would be funky to try to do this. It's doable, but it would require some engineering.

has anyone tried this on a 2008 model? Is the setup going to be exactly the same?

However, if you want the radio or cd, you will not be able to simulateously listen to the radio or a cd while viewing the map as the radio function and cd function switches the video and audio sources for the sound system.
This was the one question I was thinking about recently. While in AUX (or GPS) mode you can only hear the GPS sounds and an MP3 Player, Correct? Obviously if you switch to Radio it will show the radio interface and kill the GPS screen. If you have an MP3 player with a built in radio (mine does and it's actually clearer than the built in Infiniti radio, believe it or not - much cleaner sounds. ??) I can listen to the radio through my MP3, and see the GPS on screen AND hear the GPS voice?

several 08 wires for AV is different colored from the 07
106 was violet in 07 (according to 07 service manual) is now light blue in 08
107 was red and now grey

there are more wires in the AV that's not listed in the 07 service manual (I'm assuming it's for the ipod integration?)

thanks to on_6mt and newmexicog for their threads/help/info

So the Garmin "black box" is the GPS unit which when wired up, uses the G's LCD screen for the Navi unit? That is COOL. If you disconnect the RCA cables in the console, you can then use it for IPods, etc as designed?
