Need help clearing possible XM scam
Need help clearing possible XM scam
I just bought an XM Kit for my Coupe and it came with no instructions. The guy at the parts counter was quick to tell me it didn't include instructions. I asked him for some printed instructions and he told me there are no instructions for that and they install them, as he said: "by the seat of their pants". When I got home and went to open the boxes, the box that had the receiver inside had been opened. That box was inside of a bigger box and that box had been opened and re-sealed. I wonder if the bastards are taking the instructions out, so we have to go to them for install. Have you guys heard of anybody getting instructions with their kit? Or anybody experiencing something suspicious? Thanks to all!
Re: Need help clearing possible XM scam
I have never received any instructions with any parts that I have purchased from dealerships. I have seen instructions for installing the satelite radio in the coupe... I think it was on this site and Freshalloy. (I know I saw a post about the Sat. Install Instructions for the FX on FreshAlloy).
Good luck.
Good luck.
Re: Need help clearing possible XM scam
Instructions are included in the XM kit's, but are removed by the dealerships. The included instcrutions are actually a link to a website that has a dealer only access page and there you can download PDF files for the XM install. I know this becouse I ordered an XM system for my G35 Coupe from Grubbs, got it and the unit was defective. I sent it back and requested a new, but instead of them shipping it out to me, I was on my way out to them (Dallas area) for business, so I figured I would just swing by and pick it up. When I get there, they gave me a fresh factory sealed unit and in that one I found that piece of paper with the link to the dealer only install instruction website. I would give you guys the link, but I can't find anymore. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please help. The website address was something like www.ndma.com. That obviously isnt it, but it was it was something like that. Stood for something.
But to be quite honest, if you need instructions to install the sat kits for the G's, then you really shouldn't be attempting it all. It's so easy!
Here it goes...
1: Remove the rear carpet, spare tire and plastic cover to the left of the wheel. Its held down by one 10mm nut.
2: Under it you will see the Bose systems amp and along its harness you will notice a white plug just hanging there (if your cars pre-wired for Sat radio). If you dont see one, well then you need to get a wire harness and you have quite a bit more work on your hands.
3: Connect the Sat unit to the white harness plug (the Sat unit will have two plug slots, only one fits though), then attach the supplied ground cable to its case and then to the vehicles chassis. You can use any of the pre-existing nuts in and around the Bose amp.
4: Then you simple mount the Sat unit down by either using the supplied double stick tape, velcro or mounting kit.
5: Now you have three options for the Sat antenna.
A - Mount it on your roof as to what the instruction say (a template is included to line it up just right).
B - You can mount it to your trunk.
C - Lastly an option many have selected to do, place it on the inside of the rear deck of your G. This way you wont have that ugly thing on the outside of your car, BUT reception performance wont be optimum. It will work, and I will honestly say it works just fine, but on a scale from 1 to 10 being the best as if it was on the outside of car, the rear deck location is a solid 8. What will make it even better is if you cut and mount direct underneath it a small metal plate, this way it will act more like a roof mounted antenna, as it uses the cars body as the "dish" and it absorbs it through the actual unit.
6: Once you get the antenna mounted you simply then go ahead and route the wires to the unit, connect them to the color coded slots, and clean everything back up.
7: You're DONE!
Jump in, turn on your system, and hit your Sat button. Within a few minutes you should start to get the preview channels and if you have activated your radio, the rest of the channels will slowly start to pop up. May take sometimes, but one thing to NOTE!!!
If you get everything up and running and all your radio says is Loading for an EXTENDED period of time, and you never get the preview channels, then chances are you may also have a defective unit.
Good luck!

Re: Need help clearing possible XM scam
actually, if your unit looks resealed or refurbed even, this is a good thing. Trust me, I'm on my 4th or 5th tuner (loading issue)... you want the latest revision possible. You only need to worry if XM wont activate the tuner because its on someone else's account. (which I've yet to see with these tuners)
Oh, and I can back up that info above.. no instructions, only the link in the box (also found with a replacement tuner like the above poster mentioned). I already got the instructions here, so it wasnt a big deal.. Plus, since the extension harness is not released yet, the factory instuctions are useless for mounting the tuner..

Re: Need help clearing possible XM scam
I appreciate all the help, especially from Ducatiguy, who went to great lentgh. The group of folks on this website kick butt. Well ... today I stopped by the Infiniti dealer closest to me (Holman Infiniti) in NJ to return the substandard Nose Bra I had bought. Keep in mind I didn't buy either the car or XM kit from them. I asked a service rep nicely and he got the instructions for me. They earned my business for sure now. They were great from the beggining, but they just didn't have the car I wanted in stock when I was ready to buy. As you guys said, the instructions come from a website and a password is needed to access the info, according to the rep. Ducati, I've been an electronics technician for nearly 20 years and have even taught it in college. I knew I could swing it. When I saw all the brackets and padded items, I figure I would use those as per instructions, hoping to extend the life of the unit. Also if the roof antenna is used, they include this special bracket and tape way of mounting the wire into the trunk to avoid water getting into the trunk. I would had not known that had I not looked at the instructions. It's possible it wouldn't had leaked without it. But I rather make sure. I would had been pretty pissed off if I had gotten a water leak for trying to save money on the installation. Anyways, I'm all set now! BTW, I believe you can activate the XM on the web. How long does it take to start working? I also heard about some code from the dealer to get free service for like a couple months. Is that so? Thanks again!

Sub-standard nose bra--- which one? I just bought one today for my G that was a "two-piece, Infiniti-made" one that has the logo, etc. Is it that bad? I've not yet taken it out of the box...

To be quite honest, I don't think you would have any issues with water leaking, considering the wires the Sat antenna uses are so thin, but if you did the extra foam pads supplied could be used for just that purpose (tighten it). Second, yes you can activate the system over the net and if you do so, I think its like $10 vs $15 or $20 that they would charge you over the phone, but if you have the dealer activation code, and if I rememmber correctly, they will waive the activation fee and also give you 3 months of free service. I did have the code, but have thrown out the paper work. I'm sure if you called up for example Carvey at Grubbs (really cool guy I had the pleasure of meeting while I was in Texas) he'll give you the code no problem.

Once the system is on, depending on your location and any obstructions to the anttenna it should take anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes for you to start recieving the prview channels. Mine came on right away, but some of my other cars took longer. From there, assuming you have activated the service, the Sat company will beam a signal to your unit every 10 minutes for the nest 36 hours or so. What I suggest for people to do is after they activate the system, wait like an hour and then go for a 15 to 20 minute drive. Within that time, all the channels will be downloaded into your unit. They'll come one or a few at a time, very rarely all at once. It takes a few minutes and you'll be up and running.

I forgot to mention that my kit included a wire harness, part # 999U9-EP000. It came in a separate box. Somebody mentioned a wire harness that wasn't out yet. I wonder if that's it. My '04 is pre-wired, so what's the harness for, to give you more cable slack?
Re: Need help clearing possible XM scam
GeoBau,
About the bra ... mine didn't have the Infinti stamp on it. It had a paper label, but no stamped Infiniti. I know the one for the 350Z has the Nissan stamp and is more supple. Every Nose Bra I've ever owned had the name brand stamp on. The plastic is also really thin unlike any other factory one I've seen. BTW, Acura makes great fitting Nose Bras. I've had them on two different cars and they fit great. While I was at the dealer today, there was another Coupe there with a Bra and the fit was terrible. I think the fancy, curvy nose and headlights of our car doesn't lend itself to a great Bra fit. There was more tugging than I cared for on a new car. And one of the plastic hooks put a small knick on the paint. It had to be returned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does yours have the Infiniti name stamped on it?

After 30 minutes of tinkering, I think I have the same one you got. I've never had this much trouble putting a bra on (First person to make a comment gets punched.) No Infiniti badge because it leaves the grill open... it's a two-piece that covers the hood, then the bottom half. I've seen it on a G before, and it looked good, but this one? Wow... this one just... wow. Yeah.
Wow.
I'll post pics later perhaps. If I don't burn the bra. Again, first person to make a comment...
