Installed a Scosche double DIN & Pioneer AVH-4200NEX this weekend

Long time lurker here on G35Driver. This weekend I installed a Scosche G35 double DIN kit and a Pioneer receiver. I haven't seen any other posts regarding the Scosche kit so I thought I'd share my thoughts.

For about $210 the Scosche kit is fantastic. The fit and finish is very good. The kit includes wiring harnesses as well as a steering wheel control kit. This saved me from having to purchase any of the Metra wiring harnesses or SWC adapters. The only thing missing was an antenna adapter.

A big thanks to Wrathernaut for his very informative guides. There were some differences in wiring up the Scosche harnesses. Figuring out the wiring was the longest part of this project for me. The Pioneer head unit has a blue/white remote amp out wire with no corresponding wire in the Scosche harness. Through comparison to the Metra harness I figured out that the blue/white Pioneer wire connected to a RED wire on the rear speaker wiring harness. There are also several wires on the SWC adapter that confused me. Some simply didn't need to be hooked up.

In the end this project took me two days. With better understanding of the wiring differences it could have been done easily in one afternoon. I also forgot to purchase an antenna adapter so I had to hit up Best Buy the next day(at about 3x the price of Amazon). I don't know why anyone would purchase a Metra kit anymore. Currently I retained all the stock speakers, added a microphone, cell phone input, and set up wiring for the future addition of an amplifier and subwoofer. This is on a non-Bose system.

And of course, pics:

This red wire I connected to the blue/white remote amp out from the Pioneer head unit harness.

The three wires with connectors you see above the SWC I ultimately left unconnected.

Fingerprints.

Small gap below the dash piece. I will fill later.

Quality buttons.

Happy with the fitment.

I hope this helps someone looking to use the Scosche kit on their G35. Please feel free to ask questions.

Thanks for the post, I wonder when Scosche came out with that kit? Definitely looks like a HUGE quality improvement over the metra kit.

And it even looks like the temperature knob turns!

Definitely time for an update to the shopping list, it looks lots better than the metra one.

Looks like they have 6 versions, 3 colors and dual/single climate control

Update after some research:

So, street price on the Scosche kit is about $210, and since it comes with a wiring harness ($10) and steering wheel adapter ($40), it's equivalently price to the metra trim kit, and for the solid buttons and twist climate control, definitely worth it. If you're doing an install with the bose amplifier, it looks like you'll still want the ROEM-NIS2 though.

I purchased my G35 just over a year ago. In that time I kept looking on ebay and other sources for a JDM dash kit as I did not like the look of the Metra kit. Kept running in to beat up kits or long wait times. I found this Scosche kit about two weeks ago and immediately made a purchase. Not sure how long it's been out. The temperature knob turns nicely and feels tight. All of the buttons are "clicky" which I appreciate. Maybe I was smart, or lucky, but everything fired up correctly the first time I powered it on. I was nervous about the Scosche kit as I had seen very little information about the company. So far pleased with the results.

Looks like I found this just in time. Picking up my new to me G sedan tomorrow.

Great find! Very cool to see people are still making stuff for the G.

I hope they do a 05+ version.

Thanks for sharing.

After almost 15 years of ownership, my 2003 G35 sedan finally fell victim to the HVAC/stereo inoperable problem. I started researching replacing the stereo receiver and almost purchased a Metra trim kit before I came across your post. Now I am definitely purchasing the Scosche kit but I am not sure which color to go with.

Did you go with the "Pewter" color trim kit? How was the color match to the original trim color?

My G35 sedan has the "Willow" interior color. I am debating if I should go with the Pewter color trim kit (which I believe is the closest color match) or if I should go with Gun Metal as a contrast highlight color.

I went with the black trim kit even though my dash is originally silver. I still have the silver shifter trim as well as the storage pocket lid. My plan is to eventually replace everything with black pieces, although I may just paint the pocket lid. The black trim kit matches nicely with the rest of the dash. It is slightly more matte than some of the other black plastic dash pieces.

Looks like the Scosche kit is only for the 03-04 dash. At least that's what their web site shows. Damn I like the way it looks.

Howdy basketbaw.
I'm in the same boat as you regarding the willow color dash. Did you end up going with the pewter?

Wow. Way nicer look than the Metra kit. And a good price.

I just ordered the Gun Metal color dash kit. I will provide an update after I receive it. It's shipping via ground shipment so it might take a week or so.

Neat, I went with the pewter. I'll post some pictures when it is done as well, for comparison on the willow interior.

Wow, that kit looks great compared to the metra.

I know it's already installed, but can someone get a photo of the back of the buttons? It looks so close the the JDM that you may be able to switch out your OEM buttons and basically have a JDM kit. Edit: looking again at the buttons, the dimensions may not be right to be able to do this.

I switched out my willow buttons on my JDM kit (JDM only comes in black and I didn't like it), so, it may be possible to do this to the scosche. Great find!

edit: why does it have the turn dial if the kit is for the 03/4? Those were push button. Made to look like an 05+?

That's what threw me off at first.

I hope they're in the process of making the 05+ kits soon. I've been waiting a while to upgrade my deck and add bluetooth functionality and other functions (usb, sd, etc).

I'm still able to use 2 of the 6 disc slots and burn mp3 cd's but its getting quite old. I also have a FM modulator (?) to connect my phone's music but the quality sucks.
