brake rotors and pad change?
 

I have an 04 5AT coupe, i went to dealership last week to have them replace my amplifier which is covered under warranty. After they have checked my car, they said my brake pads and rotors [both front and rear] needs to be replaced. And It will cost me around $836. I think it's too much for oem brake pads and rotors.
I have around 41k miles on my car btw,

What should i do know?
1. Let them replace my brake for 800 bucks?
2. Get an aftermarket brake rotors and pads? [any recommendation?]
3. Get oem brake rotors and pads from someone on this forum ?

If that price is for replacing all four rotors and sets of pads, it's not all that bad. You can do a little better by buying aftermarket parts and having the work done by an indy shop. Figure a set of pads will be $65 per axle, rotors $70-125 each (just plain ones), labor to install roughly 2-3 hours per axle at book rate.

If you are bothered by certain characteristics of the OEM setup (brake dust, and grabby, squeaky brakes), then aftermarket can help. Try Hawk HPS pads. Search this forum lots.

i did search a bit. hawk is good, but some ppl recommend akebono pads.
The problem is the rotors, i want drilled slotted rotors but i heard some issue that some crappy rotors will easily crack. I'm thinking of ebc rotors, any review about EBC rotos?

you can probably have your rotors resurfaced if they are still thick enough, which they should be, and pick up a set of hawks for around $180-200.. And find a shop to do it all for around 100.. So 800 is way way too steep! Hawks almost stop as well as OEM's but minimal dust.. Ive heard great things about Project Mu and will get those for my next change

Give MEECHIN (Dru) and PM.

He can get you all the parts for about $500'ish - 4 new rotors (I think drilled/slotted) and better than Hawk pads. Get some SS brake lines as well and get it all installed. You may still spend $800 - but you'll have 2x-3x better brakes!

I just did my brakes yesterday. I went with the Axxis deluxe pads and I love them. To do the brakes on the G really isn't that hard. I will be posting a DIY soon on changing the brakes. Also do you have Brembos?

What is the most popular aftermarket brake here? i mean most people go to replace oem one, i know a lot of ppl here have BBK and brembo.

I have an 04 Non brembo Coupe and will be ordering Akebono Pro Acts for my fronts from tirerack very soon. I don't need them yet but after 4 years of ownership, I'm sick of that dust! I'll keep the OEM pads for the rears as they don't have much dust anyway. I've heard the rear OEM pads are akebono.

Some RacingBrake replacement rotors are drilled and slotted for about the same price you pay for OE rotors.

They're heat treated so they're more durable than your typical rotors, with a patented internal ventilation design that is suppose to aid cooling. Drilled rotors crack when they exceed operating temperature and cool down too rapidly, like when used on the track. If they crack for street use then something else is wrong...But for track use you should probably stay away from drilled/slotted rotors anyway.

I installed a set of EBC sport rotors and they were defective. They had a severe runout problem. These rotors are also quite noisy. I ended up with PowerSlot rotors from TireRack. I am very happy with these rotors. I am using a set of EBC Greenstuff pads (I bought for the EBC rotors). The Greenstuffs work quite well with the PowerSlot rotors.

get stoptech stage II upgrade for $700. new rotors, pads, brake fluid, and steel lines.

Just had the dealer turn my front rotors and install the Akebono pro acts. The dealer charged me $65 and the pads cost $60. $125 is not a bad amount to get rid of the dust and get more than 13,000 miles out of the OEM pads.

As far as pad life goes, I put a set of EBC Greenstuffs on my sedan when it was new. I changed them out at 27K miles and they still had a bit of life left in them (I probably could have gotten 35K miles if I wanted to push it). EBC makes a fine brake pad, just stay a away from their rotors.
