G35/350Z aftermarket coilover, springs and shocks spec's w/updates
Just posting this to provide information for more informed choices.
NOTE!: Any aftermarket 350Z spring will lower a coupe a additional ½” over and beyond the published drop amount for the 350Z. However given the fact that they use a spring stiffness that’s over 100% stiffer then oem, if ride quality is of concern, either hitch a ride in a car equipped with them or make a different choice. In addition, several review’s have been done by people actually having the original more softly sprung Tein Flex coilovers do not take their comments to mean the same as the one using the current product, the original product specs are listed below under Tein Flex JDM. Tein Flex JDM specs (can be special ordered est 10-12 weeks delivery) Full-length adjustment and height adjustment for separate setting of the height and spring preload Spring rates 560/560 side Note: This is the original specs first offered in the U.S. with the Flex, shortly after it’s introduction the specs changed to those listed further above (672/672) Tein MonoFlex Monotube, adjustable dampning M.S.V valving, full height adjustable Spring rates 784/784 Side Note: Well reviewed on my350Z, but a greater level of caution should be exercised if you drive on "B" roads very often. Also, not a slam dunk vs other offerings in the same class. Tein MonoFlex JDM same specs as above, but softer valving and spring rates Spring rates 560/504 Tein Super Racing Monotube, external reservoir, adjustable with independent settings for compression and rebound, full height adjustable Spring rates 895/895 (web site say's they don't come with springs) Side note: Questionable valving, lack of overall resources, having one source to repair, and having several other choices in this class make this a tuff sell. Tein Basic (twin tube construction, non adjustable dampners ) Spring rates 504/504 Side Note: Popular because of price and the brand name. Some say it has too much bounce, others like the setup just fine. Getting a ride in a owner equipped car before you buy, isn't a bad idea. Tein SS JDM (twin tube construction, adjustable dampners ) (JDM only at this time. 10-12 weeks delivery, come via ship) Spring rates 392/392 Shock dyno's can be seen here. http://www.tein.co.jp/techinfo/techi...4/00118_8p.htm Tein CS (Monotube constructionad, adjustable dampners ) Special Note: They are valved and sprung to fulfill their intended mission of offering up improved ride comfort. More specifically their valving will impact the performance they can deliver. If you want performance, pick a different Tein offering or pick a different brand. Spring rates 392/392 |
Nismo S-tune shock and spring setup 350Z (twin tube, fixed height)
.6"/.6" drop (as shown on page 10 http://www.nissanusa.com/pdf/microsi...ar_catalog.pdf ) Spring rates 393*-448/254*-504 *estimated initial spring rates (notice the front doesn’t have much spread) Nismo S-tune shock and spring setup G35 coupe twin tube, fixed height .8"/.8" 448/504 (front spring slighly progressive, rear progressive Nismo S-tune G35 sedan twin tube, fixed height 1"/1" drop Spring rates 347/342 (progressive springs) Ohlins PVC coilovers Monotube, adjustable damping (listed on many web sites as rebound only, this in not correct) Full height adjustablity on the fronts Spring rates 560/392 Side note: PVC vavling system operates on compression side to improve control and still offer comfortable ride. Good compromise between spring rate and ride quality. I now own these Standard ride height on 350Z -.8"/-8" Min drop amount on 350Z Front: -2" Rear:-.2" Max drop amount on 350Z Front:-1.4" Rear -1.4" http://www.carrozzeriajapan.co.jp/ohlins/4w/pcv.html ^use this to translate http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ Ohline DFV coilovers Same specs as PVC above, but valving system also works on rebound, damper bodies are aluminum vs steel. Jic Flta-2 350Z Z33FLTA2H (Monotube construction, adjustable dampning) Full-length adjustment and height adjustment for separate setting of the height and spring preload Special Note: This setup is known for it’s extremely harsh ride quality, buyer beware get a ride and drive in a Z33 spec setup before you buy. Add in Jic's extreamly poor customer service in the U.S., pick a different system. Spring rates560/672 Note: We have seen this setup run with softer 504lbs rear springs , search post’s by FritzMan on my350z Jic Flta-2 350Z Z33FLTA2S**** same as above but with softer progressive rear springs. 560/560. Jic Flta-2 G35 coupe CPV35FLTA2 (Monotube, adjustable dampning) Full-length adjustment and height adjustment for separate setting of the height and spring preload Spring rates 560/560 Spec change! I have no idea when this happened, but the Jic-Magic web site now show's the spring rates as 560/448 Jic Flta-2 G35 sedan (Monotube, adjustable dampning) As of 1/06/07, this coilover is no longer listed on Jic's web site Full-length adjustment and height adjustment for separate setting of the height and spring preload Spring rates 504/392 FLT-A2-VIP Series The new FLT-A2 VIP are made for the enthusiast that wants that extreme dropped look and high quality ride comfort. Shares many performance features as the FLT-A2's but made specifically for high end luxury vehicles. G35 Sedan Spring rates 504/336 FLT-A1 350Z, Twin tube construction, 10 way adjustable, full height adjustable Spring rates 560/560 Z33FLTA1**** (rear springs are progressive) G35 Coupe, Twin tube construction, 10 way adjustable, full height adjustable Spring rates 560/448 G35 Sedan, Twin tube construction, 10 way adjustable, full height adjustable Spring rates 504/336 Cusco Zero 1&2 Full-length adjustment and height adjustment for separate setting of the height and spring preload Zero 1 has non adjustable dampning Zero 2 has adjustable dampning Spring rates 560/392 Side note: One of the better setups on the market, worth $600 more vs other choices in the $1000 price range. Bilstein PSS coil over Monotube construction, non adjustable dampners, reuses oem upper shock mounts Spring rates 370/240-420 (rear progressive) Note: A superior choice for ride quality vs Tein basic, Eibach Pro-S and Kw Variant 1, with better valving and lower sprign rates Likely a better choice vs Tein CS too. If your considering having them revalved, use Bilstein and no one else! Bilstein PSS9 coilover Monotube construction, adjustable dampners, reuses oem upper shock mounts Special Note: If you keep the damper adjustment at or below 5, this setup delivers a ride and drive quality that is beyond reproach. Settings above 5 are not advised, ride and performance is compromised, I used to own these. Spring rates 370/240-420 (rear progressive) Bilstein Pss10 Same as the Pss9, however it add's on more level of damping adjustment and it does feature different valving, spring specs are unchanged. HKS III (not the Sport model) Monotube, adjustable damping*, full height adjustablity Replaces the HKS RS *Rear dampers adjust from the bottom so you do not have to pull the damper to adjust them Spring rates 448/448 Side note: Like a lot of products that promise street comfort and trackability, this setup may or may not delivery on the track. Review's to date do suggest they deliver on the comfort promise however. Yet, IMO it is one of the better choices and worth a premium vs several $1000 choices. HKS III Sport (Monotube adjustable damping*, full height adjustablity Replaces the HKS II. *Rear dampers adjust from the bottom so you do not have to pull the damper to adjust them Spring rates 616/672 Side note: Valved rather stiffly according to the specs listed at HKS Japan HKS LS+ G35 Coupe Monotube construction, adjustable dampners Rear dampers adjust from the bottom so you do not have to pull the damper to adjust them Spring rates 504/448 ( out of production, no longer avaliable ) Side Note: Has the unusual distiction of actually being valved stiffer then the same coilover made for the 350Z (though you can only see 350Z LS+’s in the JDM catalog). HKS LS+ 350Z Monotube construction, adjustable dampners Rear dampers adjust from the bottom so you do not have to pull the damper to adjust them Spring rates 448/448 ( out of production, no longer avaliable ) Sidenote: Listed on HKS's Japan web site, but not on the US web site. These might actually be our RS coilover. HKS LS G35 (Monotube construction, non adjustable dampners) Spring rates 448/336 ( out of production, no longer avaliable ) Special Note: A comfort ride system, compare to Tein CS coilover HKS LS 350z (Monotube construction, non adjustable dampners) Spring rates 448/448 ( out of production, no longer avaliable ) Special Note: A comfort ride system, note higher rear spring rate vs. G35 application HKS II Monotube construction, adjustable dampners Rear dampers adjust from the bottom so you do not have to pull the damper to adjust them Spring rates 504/504 ( out of production, no longer avaliable ) Special Note: sprung and valved to be HKS’s most aggressive product for the G35/350Z, it is a notch above the RS coil over on the track, compare to Tein Flex and Jic coilovers. May be very tuff to get, said to have been removed from the USDM HKS catalog and is now JDM only, or so I’ve heard. HKS RS Monotube construction, adjustable dampning Rear dampers adjust from the bottom so you do not have to pull the damper to adjust them Spring rates 448/448 ( out of production, no longer avaliable ) Special Note: “Marketed” as HKS’s track coil over with a good street ride. $1600 when on sale Owner review's have been extreamly positive since it's introduction. |
Stance LX+Pro Twin tube, adjustable damping, ride quality system*
Spring rates: 616/560" Notes:*Sold as having a "luxurious ride quality" because of it's twin tube contruction. However, you can have the best dampers on the face of the earth, but it won't matter with springs as stiff as this setup uses. If your after ride quality, buy HKS III, Bilstein PSS10, or Tein CS. Stance GR+ Monotube, adjustable damping, full height adjustablity Spring rate true coilover* version 672/280* (*='s about a 672 spring in the oem rear location) Spring rate oem style rear 672/616 Side note: Well liked on my350Z, most popular with the "drop it to the ground" crowd, several have been pulled and resold because they did not deliver on the track, not suprising better choices exist that are worth paying more for. Stance GR+Pro Same specs as GR+ true coilover, but add's a helper springs in the rear. Not worth paying extra for given what helper springs are for and what Stance suggests you are to use helper springs for. Stance GR+Pro 3-way Twin tube construction, true coilover, full height adjustablity Top of dampers adjusts rebound only, 15 settings. Seperate gas canister has 15 adjustments for low speed compression (piston speed) and 4 adjustments for high speed compression (piston speed) Stance GR+ Pro SS-D, AL-Pro Same specs at GR+Pro, but with special valving for track use. Side note: Don't get confused, these are not Penske, Ohlins, Moton, Zeal, JRZ or Koni. All these companies can lay claim to racking up win's, does not mean squat, lot's of people podium on rather crappy shocks. Their is a reason the top companies delivery, construction and valving. Buy NOTHING in this class before seeing a real shock dyno, standard and one with a hysteresis loop. Zeal Function Xs Monotube, adjustable dampning(6 levels), full height adjustablity Generally stocked as a truecoilover setup in the rear and avaliable by special order with a oem style sperate spring/dampner setup in the rear Spring rates 560/448 Side note: If you special order them with different spring rates, Zeal automatically changes the valving to suit your rate choice. Understood as a top 5 product, yet little to no information exists to back this up. Zeal Function X Monotube, adjustable dampning (30 levels), full height adjustablity. Generally stocked as a truecoilover setup in the rear and avaliable by special order with a oem style sperate spring/dampner setup in the rear Spring rates 672/560 Side note: If you special order them with different spring rates, Zeal automatically changes the valving to suit your rate choice. Understood as a top 5 product, yet little to no information exists to back this up. KW coilovers Variant's 1,2&3 twintube construction, uses Oem upper shocks mounts V1=non adjustable dampning, V2=adjustable damping, V3=separate adjustability for compression damping AND rebound damping Spring rates Front 485lbs to 525Lbs Rear: 240Lbs to 548Lbs (progressive springs) Side note: Covering a wide range, these three products offer up german engineering. I have shock dyno's of the Variant 2, they look pretty good. All three version's use a progressive rear spring with a wide rate spread, which will compromise aggressive street and track driving, though this can be fixed. Eibach Pro street S coilovers Drop range on 350Z 0.8 to 1.6" front same for the rear. As per Eibach they are relabled KW variant 1 coilovers, springs are a different color simply because Eibach has them refinished red vs yellow. Greddy Type S coilovers Monotube, 32 way adjustable, full height adjustment 350Z and G35 coupe fitments have different part numbers and different spring free lengths Spring rates 560/448 Note: Likely OEM supplied by Bc Racing D2 Racing/Ksport Coilovers Monotube constrution full length height adjustment separate from preload rear springs on coilover bodies side note: Buy something else, given all your other choices, not worth your time, Kg/mm DNA coilovers (this setup uses 4 springs on the rear of the car) (Monotube construction, full length height adjustment separate from preload, adjustable dampners) Spring rates in LBS Front 748 Rear progressive 336 to 672 + 280 linear on dampner Stiffer then oem springs by F+238% R+233% to 331% Buddy Club Racing spec coilovers (rear springs on dampners ONLY) (Monotube construction, full length height adjustment separate from preload, adjustable dampners) Spring rates in LBS Front 560 Rear 448* Stiffer then oem by F +78% R +113%* (see note at very top) With 336lbs rear springs R +64%* R-SR I-shock coilovers (JDM only, R-SR USA may or may not be able to get them ) ride height 0mm to -30 mm on 350Z looking at pics, looks like they have full length height adjustment separate from preload with 46mm piston’s pretty sure they are monotubes Uses titanium springs (Ti2000) http://www.rs-r.co.jp/products/shock/sports.htm http://www.rs-r.co.jp/products/shock/pdf/z.pdf Spring rates in LBS 560/504lbs Silk Road SPEC-RM/A8 coilovers monotube 8 way adjustable dampners, full length height adjustment separate from preload Spring rates in LBS 560/448 http://www.silkroad-jp.com/section/a8.html $1699 Unitech racing/Truechoice Koni coilovers Shortned and revalved Koni shocks converted into coilovers, extensive R&D by the PerformanceNissan racing team, Unitech Phase 3 have adjustable shocks Phase 4 are DA independent for bump/rebound Spring rates in LBS 500/425 Side note: Very specific valving with a compression curve that is more digressive then competive dampers from TcKline. Vs the TcKline damper, they also have much better internal pressure balances, for much lower hysteresis level. Moton Club sport dampners with threaded shock bodies, monotube contruction, seperate gas canisters, double adjustable with independent adjustment for rebound and compression. Spring rates: springs sold seperately, call manufactuer Shocks Tokico D-spec twin tube 8 way double adjustable (bump and rebound) gas shocks 2 fitment's are sold DSP-7 for the G35 and DSP-9 for the 350Z. The only difference between the DSP-7 and 9 is that the rear shocks on the DSP-9 350Z fitment feature's shocks that have shorter bodies by 3/8" and piston shafts that are 1 7/8" shorter The 2 fitment's are both valved the same. These shocks can be set from softer then oem G35 shock to stiffer then the oem 350Z shock, your choice depending on how you set them. $489 Side note: Do not run them with any spring that is beyond 450lbs, cannot be revalved, serviced by Tokico USA only. Koni Sport SA twin tube shocks Single adjustable for rebound. Side note: IMO, do not run spring rates above 450lbs in the front and 450lbs in the rear, without having them revalved. Can be serviced, revalved, shortened, even converted to double independent adjustablity for seperate rebound and compression control by several authorized Koni service providers. I have shock dyno's for them. $750-$950+ Bilstein H.D. Monotube, non adjustable The best shock out at a respectable price, provided your not asking it to run with springs that are too much stiffer then oem. Can be revalved by Bilstein USA for only $65 per shock JRZ twintube DA shocks $3500+ May or maynot have been a one off custom shock, call JRZ sidenote: Do not let the twin tube construction fool you, this likely have the R&D power applied to overcome that design, much as Ohlins Twin tube for other apps would also. TcKline Racing DA shocks $419 each These shocks are a double adjustable version of regular Koni SA shocks custom made for Tckline by Koni. They seperate adjustability for compression and rebound dampning via to seperate adjustment systems. They have their own valving specs totally seperate from Koni SA valving. They have a second spring perch grove cut on the front shocks that is 1" lower vs the front Koni SA shock that has a second grove cut 1/2" higher. Can handle up to 800lbs spring rates. Just like Koni SA shocks, these are a low pressure twin tube design. http://www.tcklineracing.com/nonbmw.htm Update note: I have shock dyno's on the TcKline shocks, after reviewing them myself and speaking with the shop that did the dyno, spend your money on something else. Koni Race 2812 series Mono tube shocks, double adjustable for rebound and compression seperately, front shocks have threaded bodies for height adjustment, Race-Valved Custom Damper Option, Limited Street Use, No Warranty, Lead Time approx 4wks. $3980 Retail Read pages 5 and 6 detailed infohttp://www.koni-na.com/pdfcatalogs/KONIMotosportCatalog.pdf Penske coilovers (monotube construction, your choice of single adjustable, double, even trible adjustble. http://anze.biz/applications.cfm Side note: Not cheap, but penske makes some of the best dampers you can buy,....period. If you invest in the parts, you can revalve these yourself, training classes are even offered. And that's the other side of things, Penske makes a wide selection of parts for different valving setups. |

Agreed. Great info Jim.
|
wow.. awesome post. very helpful.
|
I'm interested in the Zeal's due to the reputation of the company and the glowing reviews. However, doesn't the transfer of stiffness to the front mean even more understeer? Wouldn't I want to find a combination that transferred some stiffness to the rear to make the car more neutral? Thanks.

Gsedan35- you did it again. :D nice job.

Wow, there is a plethora of information in this thread- definitely worthy of a sticky!
