Certified Pre-Owned or No?
 

I'm looking into buying a G35 Sedan and have found a few great deals on '06 models locally. My question is, should I really concern myself with getting a certified pre-owned vehicle or should I just settle for used? There are two different major dealers in kentucky and one advertises "certified pre-owned 142pt inspection yadda yadda yadda" and the other just says "comes with remainder of factory warranty." Are these the same things or no?

I'm leaning towards an '06 White G35 Sedan. RWD. I don't think it has the premium or nav package. 44,xxx miles at $19,995. Certified Pre-Owned.

if the non-certified car is much cheaper, it's probaby worth it to take to get inspected yourself at a local trusted mechanic or at a nissan/infiniti dealer.

They are both Infiniti dealers. The only two in the entire state as far as I knwo. Either way I would have a third party inspect the car. But I just didn't know if I should concern myself with buying a true certified pre-owned or not.

i would ask what they did to make it certified, i know lexus/bmw sometimes recondition leather seats and give the exterior paint a good detail and polish. That adds added value to the car.

i was told that infiniti does NOT have any such thing as "certified pre-owned" and that all dealers sell their preowned cars at a standard that is equivalent to the so called 'certified' vehicles mercedes, lexus, etc. sell them at.

i don't know if this only applies to california.

It's a copy cat term from BMW.
BMW has a CPO program that BMW corporate regulates.

Infiniti has no such program.
The dealer you went to may very well do a good "certification", ....but it's an in house program.

The car goes through a 142-pt inspection that covers just about everything. Not all used Infiniti's qualify. I just figured that the other authorized Infiniti dealer would advertise all of their used cars as Certified Pre-Owned instead of the balance of factory warranty deal. I guess it would make sense just to call the dealer directly.

But that still brings me to, should I concern myself with finding a certified car or just find a better deal on a used one? I like the idea of having my car covered under warranty but if Infiniti is impossible to deal with as far as warranty repairs then it may not be worth it.

from my experience, the whole warranty issue seems different w/ each dealer. i bought mine w/ the original warranty and also got an extended warranty. i have had a ton of sh1t fixed under the original warranty; never gave me a hassle w/ it; always got a loaner and great service, too.

Infiniti DOES offer a CPO program. All cars certified under the program come with a limited 6 year 100k mile warranty.

While we pass this cost on directly to the consumer, most dealers decide to mark this up significantly.

Sorry for digging this up, but how much extra is a CPO vehicle worth? I am referring to one with the 6 yr/100k warranty. I am looking at an 07 G35 auto with sport/prem/nav/tech with 24k miles. They have been asking 32k and just lowered it to 30. This still seems a little high to me, but maybe the CPO is worth more than I think.

I personally think that is expensive when considering what a brand new 2008 could be had for. I think they are going to lose money (although I think they bought it cheap and are trying to make some good money of this) by the time they sell this.

Even without the CPO, all the dealers are looking to sell extended warranties. When I just bought mine, they were willing to give 4 years (I think 40K more miles) for about $1000. The car still had 2 years manufacturers warranty, so I really saw that offer as a 2 year warranty for $1000. I plan for things to break before then....or never...or I pay.

It is peace of mind though. So what is that worth?

Consider that the CPO is effectively an extended warranty AND it qualifies you (potentially) for a lower APR.
