Premium Fuel

The door on the fuel filler cap reads Premium Fuel only. The dealer told me you can use regular, just fill up with Premium every third tank. I've got less than 1000K on the car and just wondering, exclusivly Premium fill ups or a mix of regular and a tank of Premium once in a while. Any thoughts ?

G35 Sedan can use regular (Octane 87) but use Octane 89 or 91, G35 Coupe use only premium (Octane 91 or higher)

Infiniti suggests a minimum rating of 87 (regular) fuel, however, recommends 91 (premium) for best performance in the sedan. If you are driving your car fairly hard, I'd suggest using premium since the ECU has to retard the timing to prevent pre-detonation if you use lower octane fuels.

Personally, I use a mid-grade in the winter, but only premium in summer. Premium blends usually contain the highest quantities of detergent additives, etc. which may also be a factor to consider.

Your dealer is wrong, --- use only premium in the Coupe. If you get stuck for gas and have to use anything less than 91 octane, use it sparingly and fill up with premium ASAP. -- and drive it easy while on the lower octane. It can cause pinging, and detonation in extreme cases.

For optimum performance on the Sedan, use premium too.

BTW, these directives are all in the owner's manual.

Why would a dealer provide such bad advice? I mean they don't have many models of cars to understand the requirements for. There seems to be so many posts on this site asking about gas requirements with dealers saying things that aren't correct.
As you've indicated Colin everything is listed in the owners manual.

Seems to be a result of misinformation and indifference, but for those guys, there's no excuse.
This goes to show it really pays to at least read the owner's manuals, and to do a little research.
Another great source of info are the Service Manuals. They're expensive but well worth it.
These are also available by download from Nissan's site for about $20 U.S. for 24 hrs. access.

You're right about reading the owners manual. It's obvious on this site many people don't, even after having the car for a while.
What kind of dough for the service manual? I had one for my MX6 but didn't end up using it much. the car just didn't ever need anything.

Yeh the manuals are nice and tho not usually referenced too much, they sure are loaded with info on everything.
The ESM (CD) is $210 USD., but if you look around, you'll find some that have been copied for considerably less. (strictly illegal tho, and not endorsed by G35Driver. )

I'd love one for the M, but close to $300 Canadian is a bit much. I might try the download this time for $20 USD.

Thanks for the info. Would I have to wear a patch over my eye if I bought one of copies for "considerably less"?
yes the download might make the most sense.
