Mac or PC?

So, I'm thinkin of doin' the "carputer" thing and was just curious. Which would workout better. I personally use both at home and find that they both have their pros and cons. Would like to know what you think and why if possible. Thanks in advance.

Jairen 07-16-2009 12:19 AM

OH GOD...

You just woke up the fan boys from both sides.

Here we go again...

4DGS 07-16-2009 12:26 AM

What will you be using the computer for?

I'm all mac, have been since my first computer. That doesn't mean PCs aren't good for some things.

Just pick what best fits what you're doing in your car and leave the fan boy Mac VS PC stuff for the mac vs pc forums haha

Well said.

oh noes..

shipjaguy 07-16-2009 01:23 AM

I'm thinking of using it as an "all in one" kind of thing. Nav, music management, Bluetooth interface ( HI just made it illegal to use your phone while driving). I'd like to eventually use it for ECU management as well. What do ya think? Too much?

Wrathernaut 07-18-2009 03:09 AM

A Mac Mini might make for a good one that'd fit in the stock navi location, behind the stock HU location, or a few other places.

Screen choice is still kinda limited.

I'm interested in doing a carputer myself, after getting a bit frustrated with the AVIC-F90BT in my wife's car.

I'm on Oahu myself, so I'll lend a hand wherever I can.

shipjaguy 07-18-2009 03:56 AM

Mahalos Wrath! I really appreciate that! Do you know if there's any ecu management software available for macs?

Wrathernaut 07-19-2009 04:30 AM

I'm not much off a mac follower, so perhaps that's a reason to choose PC over mac - just the easier availability of software to read stuff from the ECU.

thescreensavers 07-19-2009 04:35 AM

What ever works better for you, I personally dont like macs and would rather use Windows or linux.

shipjaguy 07-19-2009 05:49 AM

That's the thing. I'm new to Macs and am more comfortable w/ PCs and the compatibility issue bug me about Macs but I really like the stability of my mac. I know that most OBD II software is PC so I may not even have a choice. But, trouble shooting in my car would be a lot harder in my car than on my home PC... hard to say what would be better. Argh!

Windows has virtually no stability problems, I have kept my computer on for 60 days with out issues (windows XP) and now they have improved stability with W7.

Mac or PC would both work either way, but you will just have to choose between which can run what software.

shipjaguy 07-19-2009 06:04 AM

So then how about software? What do you know about OBD II, and Nav? what have you had experience with?

jwrape 07-19-2009 06:11 AM

I used to be a die hard PC lover, now there is no other way but MAC.

oh me? idk I am just a windows fanboy ahaha:thewave:

the1cyrus 07-23-2009 03:42 PM

windows is really the only way to go if you want software flexibility. meaning you have more options. Now i said windows because you can use either a mac or pc for that.

4DGS 07-23-2009 07:55 PM

What? You can't run apple OS on a PC??

You mean buy a mac because you can partition part of the drive off to run windows.

PC = Personal Computer

Yes you can run Apple OS on a PC, lol every computer you buy at the apple store is a PC.

But running Apple OS on non apple hardware is against there rules blah blah

Google hackintosh

4DGS 07-24-2009 12:49 AM

By PC I am referring to a computer built to run windoze.

It's against apples rules because they prefer to keep meat in the butcher shop, not their computers.

Never seen a windows based computer run any mac os...never want to.

Jairen 07-24-2009 12:52 AM

So would a mac mini fit in the DVD NAV slot?

JAYY-G35 07-25-2009 07:45 PM

Get the mac, I weaned myself on to Macs using my girl's macbook.

You can run your Windows operating system on the mac. Check youtube and also Apple's website, they finally got around to giving those who are on the fence a fair look at the mac's capabilities.

I have been a PC head since I was 12 years old, and I'm saving up now for a 24" IMac. It took me a few weeks to get that "what the hell is this bullsh_t" look off my face while using her laptop, it was worth sticking with to learn.

hpric 08-06-2009 02:33 PM

Dude, whatever floats your boat. you can run a mac or pc although I think there are more frontends and skins for windows based computers. Which ever you decide they make a mini in either version that will fit your nav glove box perfectly

rcdash 08-13-2009 12:16 PM

Figure out what applications you want to run. THAT'S what matters. Streetdeck (www.streetdeck.com) only runs on a PC and it's hands down the best integrated software system for the car.
