Just installed my Carputer. Pics soon.

I've been tossing around the idea of installing a carputer since before I had the G. My HU finally crapped out on me and I decided to take the carputer plunge. Boot times are about 30 seconds until usable, which is OK, but not great.

Touchscreen: Lilliput 7"
Power Supply: M4-ATX 250 Watt
Motherboard: ECS TIGT-I2 (Intel Atom D410 @ 1.66ghz)
HDD: Plextor 64gb SSD
RAM: 2GB
Optical: LG DVD burner
Sound: SoundBlaster X-Fi PCI-E Extreme Audio
OS: Windows 7 Starter
Front End: Centrafuse 3.1

extras:
ELMScan 5 USB
USB Bluetooth adapter
USB Wireless adapter
250gb External USB HDD for media storage
Microsoft Streets & Trips w/ GPS adapter

on order:
Directed HD Radio

contemplating:
XM radio

Audio setup:
Phoenix gold RS6.5 components up front
Phoenix gold RS6 speakers in rear
Crunch 5 channel amp

I had a much stronger system built out, but I didn't want to take any chances with the power draw, so I opted for Atom. Aside from the boot time, I'm pretty happy with the build and its performance. Now to clean out the trunk and post some pics :)

Yep, Win7 takes advantage of the SSDs to allow a faster boot time.

Are you booting from sleep mode or cold-booting?

The system should be able to wake in about 6-7 seconds with that setup, if the cold boot time is about 30sec.

oh doh, did not see the SSD ok :D

Sounds pretty good man, how are you liking it so far? Anything you would have changed if you were going to do it over again? Sounds like a good build, definitely in for pics!

I was cold-booting. I've always been wary of Hibernation since I've had too many experiences where the PC would not boot or blue screen after recovering. I just set it up for hibernation and it boots in about 20 seconds now, with most of the delay happening at POST.

Like I said, I've kicked around the idea of a carputer for a few years. Now that I've done it, I don't think I would ever do it again. For about 2/3 of the money I dumped into it, I could've just gotten a new Avic-X920BT. Having said that, its been a great experience and while I don't have every feature set up or available, I'm satisfied with what I have. Maybe my opinion will improve once I get all the features/functions set up correctly and resolve any of the minor annoyances I have.

here's a couple of iphone pics; that's all I've had time for recently:

how did you get this and does it really work?

zoop425 01-02-2011 06:11 PM

I have been thinking of doing this recently but with the OEM screen. I would just use a small touch pad for control I think.

Thats pretty cool!

Does the boot take a long time to load?

I bought the parts and put it together. Yes, it really does work.

I wouldn't use anything other than a touchscreen monitor. I don't believe you would get a decent resolution out of the OEM screen plus navigating the UI with a touchpad with a mouse while driving is dangerous.

After setting up hibernation, I've trimmed it down to about 20 seconds from ignition to useable.

Too Funny, Folks, carpc's have been around forever. In my opinion you can build a carpc that will out perform any aftermarket headunit for about $700 including the touchscreen. Ever since I installed my first carpc back in 04 I have never looked back.
