paint rough

alright well i just got my car back from the body shop minor work repair the front bumper.. The car came back filthy because i asked them not to wash it so i understood it would come back dirty.

Well before it went in the shop it was as smooth as can be and perfectly clean i wax it every other week or so. So its been smooth for quite sometime

I pick it up and its got a layer of dust or whatever was all over it. So i washed it and when i was done the paint around the entire car felt very rough i can run my hand through it and feel little things, and just felt rough. Now i am thinking maybe i just didnt do a good wash.

Now i was wondering it was just claybard like 3 or 4 months ago if i just did a bad job washing it and it needs a rewash and some good wax or if i need to go back and claybar then wax again..

Im really hoping not go claybar since it takes so long and just wash and wax with meguires NXT tech wax..

so any opinions because before it went in the shop it was smooth all over now its pretty bad.

I was thinking wash it with some dawn soap and then go wax it with meguires nxt tech wax and hopefully problem solved?

What do you suggest ? Wash and Wax or Clay then Wax

Since it was in a body shop it was exposed to all kinds of things flying around in the air just imagine the work that is done in a body shop and chances are those bits of fiber glass, medals etc are all deposited on the surface of your paint I would really recommend claying it but use a lot of lubricant followed by wax and a coat of polish.

my guess is you got hit with some overspray. it happens. claybar is the easiest way to get rid of it. when i want to start over i go dawn, clay, meguiars soap, wax.

I think Perry05G35 and Alan have the right idea. You are going to want to clay bar the vehicle, especially after sitting in a body shop. This will be the only way to effectively remove all of the stubborn contamination. You may want to inspect for swirls and other imperfections at this point and take any paint correction steps (polishes).

EDIT - If it was a repaint... DO NOT follow up with your favorite sealant or wax as the panel needs 90 - 120 days of cure time if it wasn't baked.

Let us know how you make out.

Was the car painted at all during its repair?

If so, would it be advisable not to touch the paint for 30 days or more before you clay bar the car?

yah and don't touch the fresh paint with wax yet. i would let it dry
at least 3-4 weeks unless it was baked.

Hold everything...........!

You asked them not to wash it........nothing wrong there but you shouldn't
have received it back with what is probably overspray on the car! Take it
back and have them take care of their problem.......why should you bust
your butt doing their work? Plus, tell them it better be perfect when you
get it back.....good body shops don't operate this way.

No don't use wax on your bumper for at least 1 month I would go as far to say 90 days to be safe. That way is they didn't do a good job on the paint they can't blame you for applying wax prematurely.

Exact same thing happened to me; rear bumper cover replaced and painted. Washed the car twice with Dawn (wanted to re-wax), and it was still rough - like there were particles in the paint.

Had to clay bar the car (some areas twice) and it went back to glass-smooth (love the finish on the car). The body shop told me I could wax or do whatever I wanted to the new paint because they bake it on; I actually did it a few days later, and guess he was right because no issues whatsoever.

Good luck!

your right but then its kinda my bad for asking them not to wash so i cant complain because they followed orders. I just didnt realize it would hurt my paint i thought it would be a little dusty rinse off soap it and the paints fine but that is not the case..

So if i took it back they can just say well its your fault for not having us wash it.
