Can you get a ticket for other state's tint laws?

In this scenario:

My state has a 35% tint law
I get 40% tint on my car
I drive into a state with a NO TINT law

Can I get a ticket? Is it like the cell phone laws? I don't want to have to check on the laws of all neighboring states before I decide to get a car tint...

According to some friends working for CHP, they could give a ticket, but a lot of people just flat out ignore it since that's not the state the car's registered.

If your car is legally tinted and registered in that state, I don't think another state can or will ticket you.....if that was the situation anyone living in a state that only requires one license plate would not be able to travel to any other state that would require two.....it wouldn't make any sense....but then again, most vehicle laws like that don't make sense anyway........

I'm not a lawyer, but I would think they could technically give you a ticket as you are in their state and must abide by their rules. Individual state laws apply to people who visit them, I don't think cars are special cased.

For example, radar detectors are legal in all states but (I think) two. So if you drive into their state using your detector, I'd be surprised if they let you go simply because you're not registered in their state.

So if I drive to California do I need to install a front plate when I cross state lines?

Yeah.. notice how the CA law doesn't say front plate, and doesn't say 2 plates.. it says every plate issued. If the state you registered your car in only issued you one plate, you're legal.

If you get a ticket for tint or a plate it will be a fix-it ticket right? Just mail them a picture of your car on the other side of their state lines. HA!

Re: Can you get a ticket for other state's tint la

My understanding is you're obligated to abide by tint law for the state your vehicle is registered. As tint laws are state code, state specific, another state is not going to enforce another state's tint law because it's outside their jurisidiction. That said, if you move into another state, you're required to register your car with them and abide by their laws unless you're exempt from re-registering in another state (like military). I only mention this because some move and try to avoid re-registering vehicle so they don't have to abide by that state's code specific laws.

Re: Can you get a ticket for other state's tint la

That's not necessarily the case. Some people live in one state and work in another. (I know, unheard of over here on the western side.. but those northeaster states are kinda puny. ) Some states don't care where your vehicle is registered, if you're in their state, you need to follow their rules.

Of course, in any state, the biggest issue isn't the percentage allowed on the front windows.. it's the level of enforcement.

Re: Can you get a ticket for other state's tint la

Unless I hear from a lawyer or judge, it's speculation. But understanding basic legal principles ... notably jurisdiction, enforcement, and reasonableness ... you can see how tint law would be hard to enforce outside one's state. Imagine people being required to remove/replace relatively permanent tint as they drive from state to state, or be required to have least common denominator just because they travel to/through another state. Who knows, maybe a lawyer or judge or perhaps someone who's gone to court will opine.

If the vehicle is legally registered in a state that allows window tint, you cannot be issued a citation from a foriegn state that does not allow tint.

If you get an out of state ticket, you can always opt to not pay it and never return to that state.
