Did Meguiar's Plastix cleaner turn my head light housing yellow?
Well, I bought some Meguiar's Plastix cleaner about 6 months ago, because I noticed my head lights were becoming less clear and more hazy. I've used it sparingly no more than about 2-3x. They cleared up no problem, but within the past month or so, I've noticed my head lights have increasingly turned from being a nice, clear, new-looking housing to now a yellowish and really crappy looking housing...
I've only used this particular plastics cleaner to clean my lights... The last time I used it was about a week ago and I thought perhaps this was just the weather causing this, but I noticed that even after last week, my lights have now gotten worse! They look even more yellow now! Sorry, I don't have pics to back my post.. I'm at work. I went out just now to get a pizza pocket from 7-Eleven and was like man, wtf my lights look worse!!! So anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem after cleaning their lights?? Thanks! |
Most car headlight lenses have a UV film on them to protect the polycarbonate lens from yelllowing. It seems you have polished that away at this point. I would suggest you put some wax/sealant on it after you polish. That should make it last a bit longer. I don't know if there is a way to replace that UV thin film

Man that sux!! Here I am thinking I was gonna do something good for it.. :7:
Well, thanks for the info man. I was unaware of the potential damage it may cause. Bump for suggestions, anyone? |
I've used this product for a while now and never had a problem...G/L with your issue

Just posting a reply to edit: I did some research and it turns out the problem was caused by something else and not Plastix...
After speaking with a friend whom I had detail my car months back, I asked what he had used to clean my head lights when he performed the detail. He told me he uses chrome wheeeeeel cleaner ... :eek3: :7: :icon25: WTF!!? The cleaner, highly abrasive, tore all my UV coat off apparently. Normally, I would not have anyone detail my car. I learned a costly lesson. Sidenote: I picked up some new lights from an 05, complete housing and all, from a friend/another forum member. |
and to think i was gonna throw out my almost new bottle of plastix! thanks for the update.

Yeah man, sorry for the confusion. I was completely unaware that he used wheel cleaner until yesterday.

that's good news for the plastix users here. I'm guessing you'd have to use the plastix every week for a couple of years to remove all the UV layer. I wonder what people on here do when they wet sand and then polish?
