tiny rock chip on driver's side door, how to fix?
 

(posted in interior/exterior forum too, but i thought readers in here might have suggestions too)

hey guys, i picked up my '06 sedan yesterday afternoon and when i was driving around on a street at 40mph, i heard something bounce off my door. given that the nearest car was 100ft ahead of my, i didn't think much of it.

then this morning when i went to work, i saw a chip in the paint about the size of a tic tac! f@#! i just bought this car yesterday! do you guys know if dealers will fix this with touch up paint or something??? please advise...

All cars are known for rock chips! Rock hits painted surface at 60 mph, paint chips, it's not armor, none are immune! It's not just an Infiniti thing! Some years ago, I had a '68 Mustang, after less than two years, the valance under the front bumper looked like it had freckles, and that was way before "modern" paint existed!

Well, Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I bought a bottle of the OEM touch up paint and noticed (just like on Grubbs), that only the Ivory Pearl requires touch-up paint AND top coat whereas other colors only require the touch-up paint. Is it because the IP is a softer paint? Just wondering. Over the weekend, my car got egged and I got everything off (I did Mother's Reflections base and then their Top Coat) and so all the egg was easily washed off. However, the damn egg left half a dozen or so nicks in the paint. So, I was planning on doing the whole routine with touch-up, Lanka, and if it is a bit dull (although I heard the OEM doesn't require top-coat except the Ivory Pearl) use a top coat from an auto store. I'll post some pictures on the before and after.

So, try using OEM paint touch-up, Lanka (I think that is the name), and then some good ol waxing. There is more to it then this, but I will do a complete write-up once I do some nicks on my car. It's pretty long process (at least to write) so I'll post it later.

yep, just use touchup paint

clean area GOOD.

Tape surrounding area

prime with tooth pick if it's down to metal.

put layers of touch up paint until the chip is made into a bubble (after it has dried).
WET sand the area with 2000 grit sand paper. if that doesn't cut it then go to 1500 if that doesn't do it go to 1000(only experianced people please)
Polish and wax.

i will probably opt to have this done if the touchup job doesn't look quite right. question tho, how do you wetsand that tiny spot when tape all around the edges? will it look different from the rest of the door?
