3M's Clear Bra
Hiya all,
I've been talking to clear armour recently and been asking them about 3m. I'm starting to do some research and would like to get the opinion from any of you who know anything. Especially long term wise anyone know how long the film lasts or does it fade etc.. etc.. Included is a picture they gave me of the kit they have for the G35. https://www.dslextreme.com/users/ucl...Driver/g35.jpg https://streetchallenge.com/uploadpi...uichi_sig1.jpg |
Re: 3M's Clear Bra
I have installed this on both my vehicles. It is nearly invisible on my silver Lexus but on my white I-30 is has slightly yellowed and shows. I have had it on both vehicles for 3 years.
I am not certain if I recommend it for a number of reasons. If a rock hits this product, it does not chip the paint but it chips the film which looks almost as bad, this indent collects dust and discolors. In time the film peels at the edges from weather and washing. The line of the film is also visible and noticable and does reduce the asthetics of the car. Lastly, unless you cover the entire front of the car, you still can get rock chips outside of where the film is. I have quite a few on my Lexus. I am not going to put it on my new G35c. I would just as soon have the hood painted for rock chips every couple of years. Where this product is worth the money is on the headlights. It prevents cracking and is virtually invisible on a headlight cover. It is good insurance, these headlight covers are really pricy. |

yuichi,
I'm getting my car back today and gonna have the clear bra installed on Monday...if you want to come down...and check it out... Mr Tint is where its at...off of Stevens Creek and San Tomas...where the car wash place is.. |
Re: 3M's Clear Bra
I had a custom install (not a kit) and all of the edges were wrapped, so you don't have all of those exposed lines. It looks much better; I highly recommend it. My G is black, so it is really hard to see it. I just have one exposed edge that goes across the hood and then wraps down the fenders, then the whole way around the front bumper. The grill and headlight bezels were taken off to wrap the film. 3M makes the film and it is sold under many different names as a kit. The key is to find someone who can install it properly...the guy who did my custom install has the film in large rolls and cuts it to fit. It took him about 8 hours to do mine.
I also had this on another car of mine, which was white, but it was a kit like the one in your pic, all of the exposed edges picked up dirt. |
Re: 3M's Clear Bra
I agree on the headlight part.
Actually we are going to be launching our G35parts.com store hopefully... soon. I think I will be selling the headlight covers and it should be simple enough for people to install themselves. I mean the headlights I imagine are more then 500 each housing. I probably don't even need to look up and I bet they are more then that https://streetchallenge.com/uploadpi...uichi_sig1.jpg |

Re: 3M's Clear Bra
There are numerous distributors who cut and make their own kits. Some names are: Xpel, DynaShield, DuraShield, Stone Guard...you can find them on the Web. The key is finding someone to install it properly...otherwise it will look like crap...and, it's not cheap! Some of these distributors also can hook you up with a qualified installer. That was how I found the person who made a custom cover rather than using one of the kits.

Re: 3M's Clear Bra
I had this installed on my 2000 Millenia S (have pre-ordered G coupe), it has been great except for what another poster says about how it "mushes" if hit with anythjing and then collects a bit of dirt/grime and blackens....besides that, I cannot really see it on my Silver S, I got it done for $300 from a small traveling dealer shop in the Boston area. Overall good choice as opposed to one of those black bra's.

Re: 3M's Clear Bra
i have to say, i've never heard of these clear bras before, but they sound really cool. i don't like how those black bras look on cars. but then again, i do have a white car, so having the buildup on the clear bras being yellow would look really nasty. i think the clear bras are a good idea, but there shud be a way to prevent the buildup.

Re: 3M's Clear Bra
I was looking at a local red 300ZX who had one on his car. When the sun was out and bright you could notice the bra if you looked closely. The only bad thing I saw was when the car was waxed. The wax would build up on the car.
What he did to get rid of it was simply take a toothpick and clean it off. But how often does everyone wax their car. Wait new G35.. every weekand right;)? hehehe https://streetchallenge.com/uploadpi...uichi_sig1.jpg |
Re: 3M's Clear Bra
I wax my Gee once a month...I wax the clear bra and I use a Q-Tip to get the wax off of the edge. If you get a 'kit', you will have many edges to remove the wax from. My Clear bra wraps around the edges of the hood and fenders so I just have the one line that runs across the hood and down the sides of the fenders to the wheel wells.

A good coat of wax should be fine.

I woudl recommend Suntek clear paint protection film..... no yellowing, no swirls as it goes away w/ heat, and installed by 631coatings in Deer Park, NY. he installs on a lot of exotics and doesn't use a precut kit so it gets the maximum protection
