Mods to run mid, low-12s reliably?

What does it take to get a 6M coupe into the mid, low-12s on regular radial tires (no DRs)? I figure this will take enough HP to propel the car through the traps at ~114-116mph.

Can this be done with bolt ons (a blower counts as a bolt on, in my book) and maintain good driveability and reliability? I am sure it can be done with nitrous, but I'm not interested in that route.

TIA

twin-turbo + every bolt-on you can find.

/edit wait... low-12s?! not going to happen, unless you get a built motor. low-13s - yes. low-12s - no.

On street tires? Reliably? The hard truth is you're going to have to buy a different car. Think Z06 or Viper or something along those lines. Boost, reliability, and the VQ35 don't go hand and in hand.

Ok, this is what I wanted to hear. Thank you for your honesty.

I have a Lingenfelter twin-turbo Z06 and an SVT Lightning which is slightly modded that runs mid-12s itself. I am looking for a 4-seater (not a plasticky used F-body or GTO) that I could hop up a bit to run mid-12s.

I helped convince my mom to buy a G35 (sedan, auto trans) about a year ago. By far it was the best car in that price range/class. I'm very impressed with it, and was hoping I could get some decent times out of a coupe if I put enough blood and sweat into it. But I'm not interested in taking a brand new car and building a shortblock for it.

Thanks again,

-Wes

What does a CTS-V run? You can get a hell of a deal on one right now.

Wes,

I think 12s are quite possible in the G coupe, but it's going to take slicks to do it. With the right bolt-ons (ECU, plenum, longtube headers- when available) and some lightweight 16" rims with 26" slicks, I think a 12.9@104mph is within grasp. A Vortech or ATI SC and slicks should get you mid 12s. You may be able to get upper 12s on DRs with that setup. Just keep the boost at stock levels, get a 6MT, and you should be okay. To improve reliability, you'll need to go in the engine and add some stronger rods and rod bolts. After that you should be good to go. Better yet, wait until the VQ32TT Skyline GT-R makes it to the states as an 07 model. That car should run upper 12s stock.

Good recommendation, and the total outlay of $$ may be the same when comparing it to a modded G35 coupe. Plus, I could always have Lingenfelter do some magic on the CTS-V if I wanted to run mid-11s with it, and it would still be reliable.

However, the G35 is a much more aesthetically pleasing car than the CTS.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your time to help a newbie to the board.

I think its very possible. I know a guy with a turboed integra daily driver that runs 11s, so why couldnt this car do it. it just takes a bunch of well planned and very well tuned bolt ons...

Personally, I would be afraid to launch the G with slicks. I really don't think the drivetrain would hold up too long. The STI may or may not be right for you but I had one with downpipe and exhaust, stock boost, half tank of gas, even raised tire pressure front and rear (AWD thing). Ran on Dec 5 in 03' at Gainseville FL 12.69@108

60' times were consistently 1.69-1.70 Let me know if you have any questions....

everyone is talking about bolt ons but guys.. what about power:weight ratios... Gut out your car and do the mods your all mentioning and I think for sure low 12s. high 12s low 13s with street tires(good street tires)

No

CANNOT Be done with bolt ons unless you consider a turbo or S/C bolt ons then you are gonna have traction problems.........thats a pretty lofty goal

Yes, it can. My daily driver ('04 G35 coupe, 6MT) just ran a 12.72@114.2. That's only with the APS TT and Crawford plenum, that's it. Stock clutch and flywheel, stock exhaust, normal radial street tires. It's not even 100% tuned. Not on a dyno anyway. Add a good clutch and flywheel, test pipes, free-flow exhaust and slicks, you'll probably hit 11s. Low 12s for sure.
