i guess put friend under car, turn car on in P, open ramming stick (w/e the FSM called it) ask friend to open drain plug, pour fluid and than instruct friend to close drain when drained fluid immediately looks like new - turn car off check for leaks, drive around check for leaks etc etc etc

can any tranny experts confirm this - Is there a replacable filter in the 2003 5AT? I had a quick look thru the FSM and didn't find anything definitive - it does mention a "pilot filter"... ? Will call the dealer tomorrow and get clarification - the work order does itemize dropping the pan and replacing filter. ...things that make you go hmmmm....

In reference to the filter. I found couple in line automatic transmission filters on e-bay. They simply splice int the cooler lines, easy install. I'll be doing this in a few weeks when I do a 20k miles flush.
SPX is a major filter maker, I wouldnt be supprised if some autopart stores have these. Magnefine looks okay. Ford also offers a kit that your local Ford dealer may stock. Surely these have to be better than no filter at all!

Please dont put an inline filter for your tranny. I have a tranny shop and have seen a lot of transmissions go bad because of them. A lot of people forget to change them and eventually they get clogged and cause the tranny to go bad. The mesh screen in the valve body is all you need to clean. Just take the pan off and spray it with carb cleaner. If you want to change the screen int the tranny, you are going to have to drop the valve body, b/c i belive 2 of the bolts uses nuts on top of the valve body to hold the screen in alos.

i am almost positive the filter is the same as my previous vq30 auto. it is replaceable but is more of a mesh screen. the only reason to replace would be if it was torn/damaged. i dropped the pan twice on my last auto and simply cleaned the screen with brake parts cleaner. clean up the pan/magnets and put on a new gasket.

So would an external spin on type filter be okay? No way I would forget to change them, and I think they have bypass valves. Is that mesh filter really good enough? As a DIYer, not a trans specialist, it dosent add up to me. I'd like to get 150k out of my trans. I was thinking that the filter along 20k fluid changes might get me there. Im sure driving style has a lot to do wit it too. Its just crazy to me that their is no true filter like on most other trans. I appreciate your input.
