Synth oil in 5AT trany???

Service manual indicates no other oil to be used other than the Nissan ATF.
I was going to change to a quality synthetic, but it looks like there are issues.

ne1 know why?
Has there been 5AT problems with other oils?

Ya, it seems strange to me, but that's what it says in the manual.
I don't know if it has anything to do with how the trany shifts with synth oil or what???
There must be some reason, but I asked the dealership & got no satisfactory answer.

Seems Nissan is pretty anal about what goes in our A/T's. I'd love to change to synthetic too but have been warned by the dealer that all tranny issues are watched very closely for compliance to oil requirements.

If you do change it out and there is a repair issue, you may find that you have no warranty. Sorry for the bad news, I don't like it either. [img]/w3timages/icons/frown.gif[/img]

Re: Synth oil in 5AT trany???

There may be seals in our trannies that are incompatible with synthetic fluids. Use synthetics, and maybe you get tranny fluid leaking all over the ground. Low/No tranny fluid in the tranny is bad...

Re: Synth oil in 5AT trany???

Clarification: The question is about Transmission fluid, not engine oil. It is safe to use synth oil in your engine, but not recommended to use synth tranny fluid in your transamission.

Re: Synth oil in 5AT trany???

The new Nissan ATF is fully synthetic and of EQUAL quality to any other synthetic. Due to a change to 2 lock up clutches a special slip/lock curve additive is required and the greater durabilty of sythetics to reach 100,000 miles. So far no manufacturer Redline, Mobil 1, or others have come out with an ATF that meet the JATCO stick slip specification.

Just like Toyota has special synthetics for their 5 speeds, JATCO has followed suit to optimize shift feel.

The JATCO [Nissan] ATF is made from the same base stock as Mobil 1 Sythetic.

In fact almost all but the cheapest generic Dexron ATF are made from sythetic base stock now.

If you feel you must use something else[ a Dexron IIIe equivalent] be sure to add Lubeguard Black at about 8 ounces [experiment upward from 5 ounces in tiny increments] to the new ATF it will then be close [approximate] the characteristics of the oem ATF in one parameter.

The affects on long term clutch wear are unknown with this combination. Buyer beware and take personal responsibility for your experiments. All failed trannies are tested [back at JATCO Tennessee facility] for oem ATF ---- changes in formulation will be grounds for warranty denial. But that is after the fact after the tranny has been changed.....what they can do at this point is debateable?

Q45tech
Thanks for the info.
I knew there was likely a good reason for the specification, but never had it adequately explained before.
I will definitely stick with the Nissan ATF now that I know.

Thanks again.
