What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

i have yet to break in my car and i wanted to know at what RPM u should launch at to get the best start. Also at what RPM's does everyone change gears in a race or on the track? is it at redline, before or after.............thanks (i'm thinking that this may contribute to the difference in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times reported in different magazines)

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

I have about 3200 mi on mine. As far as the shift RPM's and launching it depends on what I'm driving like. If I'm racing someone from a light I will usually launch at about 2200 RPM.
That usually gets a quick start with out too much tire slippage. If I'm just doin some regular driving I will launch at around 1200 RPM, that makes it nice and smooth usually. Same is true for changing gears. If I'm racing or driving hard I've found that around 5200 RPM seems to get the best shift for me. If I'm just cruzin it's usually around 3500 RPM. Again part of it is preference and part of it is experience. I have been driving stick for about 6 years. A warning though if you are still in the breakin period follow the MFR. rules. Don't shift above 3000 RPM and do no drive for extended amounts of time above that. Most importantly: Have Fun! You are driving a sweet machine! Peace

I'm no expert, but I would think that you would want to shift where HP is at its maximum. For our car, 280hp@6200rpms. If I remember correctly, redline is 6500, so you should shift pretty close to redline.

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

It's the torque curve that determines where you shift, not HP. When you shift, the RPMs (obviously) drop down depending on speed and gear. As the RPMs climb, the torque eventually starts to fall off. You want to shift at the point where more torque is available in the next gear. Beyond that, I'm not sure how the calculations are done to determine those points.

I agree with dubiux there is still a good amoutn of pull in all the gears at 5200. Tabz just go out and drive your car some more you will find it has certain chracteristics to follow.

Anyone know where we can get hold of a torque/rpm graph?

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

I'm also learning stick and been driving my coupe for 2 months, when you say launch at 2500 rpm does this mean step on the clutch all the way to the floor then rev it to 2500 rpm and just drop the clutch? Also for normal driving what RPM do you shift from 1st to 2nd? thanks..

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

your wrong ryoken....your supposed to shift after Max. HP, if it was @ torque then why would you need to calculate horsepower?
horspower is unit of Power, and a function of Torque and RPM, so therefore you should shift just after peak RPM, which is at 6200RPM
Also note that Max Torque is reached at 4800RPM, that will be the best place to start your vehicle at when racing, but as we all know, we live in a world where there is friction and lack thereof at times. The best launch would be between 2500-3000 (from what i've heard in other posts)

Torque peaks at 4800 and then sharply drops off, but HP continues to climb because of higher revs
simple math

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

yes retret....rev the engine to 2500 while not in gear, then put in gear and drop the clutch,
If your street racing, you really should rev high enough so that you dont peel out, your tires can squeak a bit but dont burn rubber, thats just wasting all of the energy spinning the tires while the car isnt going anywhere.
So launch at the point where your tires have just enough good grip (at 3,000 according to other posts)

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

Rambo,
does it make a difference if I rev the engine while pressing the clutch all the way then just let go of the clutch?, can you explain why you need to be out of gear when revving?..

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

so do we agree at the following?

launch @ 2500-3000 rpm and shift just after 6200

this leads me to my next q, in some mags the 0-60 time is 6.1 or 6.2 and in others its 5.6. could the reason be that they shifted at different rpm's............its good to know for us G owners

anyone else with their opinions?

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

retret, im not a MT pro yet but i think (and been told this many times by pros) that its always best to try and not use the clutch as much as possible (minimizes wear and tear on it)
Im sure you can leave it in gear with clutch fully disengaged then rev and drop the clutch, i dont think there is a difference between the 2 methods
dunno man, anyone else know?

Tabz....agreed....try both and see which works for you, as for the magazines, there's tons of variables out there....the main ones are 1) Driver skill, 2) Does the mag post the BEST time or the AVG time 3) of course, when they shift, but that has to do with driver skill.

Although this doesn't answer the question, this is good to know.

Re: What RPM's to launch at and to change gears?

Rambo, if I'm wrong, then I guess this article is, too:

When to shift

I think you misunderstood me. I didn't say shift at the torque peak, I said shift when there's more torque available by upshifting than by staying in the current gear. This brackets the peak torque and peak hp points on the graph.
