can't change from D to manual shift
 

hi guys i actually searched like 5 different search criterias so here is the problem I had today.

I myself own a 2003 5at, i usually drive it in the manual mode.today when i shift from D to manual, the screen still shows as if I am at D.first i thought maybe the ecu doesnt realize that i am in manual mode.
tried to down and up shift but the car still acts like its on D.
I stopped the car, completely re-started, didnt work again, then after like half an hour driving , i restart the car one more time, now everything is back to normal.
im okay the fact that everything is back to normal, was wondering what would be the reason behind this.if its something i should act before so that it does not end up being a big problem.
