axle retaining clip
Very helpful thread. I'm into this repair right now. Like Munkle, I removed the from right CV axle and there was not a retaining clip on the shaft. I looked into front diff. and I think I can see it inside in its spot. The top picture of this thread shows an GT68's axle and best I can tell, it also has no clip. So, should I try to fish the clip out of there or should I just push the axle back in and trust that the clip will find it home? Thoughts appreciated.

Did you ever determine if there was a retaining clip for the axle? I pulled my shaft and no clip, however, I can see it in the differential. So, I'm looking for advice on whether to try and wrestle it out of there, or just slide the axle back in. I don't want to accidentally knock it out and push it into the diff.

Just push it in. If you happen to push the clip into the differential, you'll know by attempting to pull the newly-installed axle back out. If you cannot pull it out with your hand, you'll know the clip is in position.
When I took a new axle, front drive shaft and front diff to the Infiniti tech a few weeks ago, we laid them all out on the ground. I'd done my research and ordered all the parts (3 replacement seals) for the front differential, but there of course was no loose clip. The tech told me I needed a clip, until I pointed out that it was in the diff. He put the axle into the diff, right there in the parking lot, and it took him a minute or two of prying with a bar and a couple of our feet on the diff to remove the right front axle from the diff again. Those rings are fairly loose inside the internal channel where they rest, but they are definitely too big to be pushed into the diff or pulled back out of the diff.

There's a snap ring on the inside, once you pry hard enough it pops the ring out.
I like to use a small prybar behind the CV housing, then slap the end of the prybar with a mini sledge a couple times.
It takes that quick impact from the hammer to pop the axle out, you can't usually just pry with your hands.

Technically you're both correct.
A final drive is just the final gear reduction before power can be utilized.
And in the case of the G35 the front final drive IS a differential which allows tires to spin at different speeds. Things like the PTO on a tractor the final drive is inside a transfer case unit since it's just spinning a shaft that you can hook equipment to.
As for the FSM they refer to the document as a front or rear final drive, and within that document they refer to the actual gearbox as a differential
