OBD2 Wireless Shift Light
 

Ok, here's the story. 2006 G35x Racing a Track Attack event. Using the manual snifter I was relying on the sound to make my shifts. Being too aggressive I over-heated the transmission (I do have a Stillen Transmission Cooler Installed) so that the Auto Trans light came on. Fortunately the light went off once the transmission cooled down and the car seems to be behaving normally. To avoid this happening again I was planning to install a Audible and/or Visual Shift Light. Ideally I would like something wireless so I can easily remove it and the car looks stock for day to day driving I was wondering if anyone is aware of any wireless OBD2 apps or devices that might fit the bill.

Bigger tranny cooler, drain/fill with a few quarts of fresh tranny fluid, this problem will be a thing of the past.

I'm a big proponent of shifting by ear, I think those shift lights are a distraction when your eyes should be on the road. Professional drivers who have trained themselves for a shift light in the middle of a pack of cars where you literally cannot hear your own engine then yeah it's a great system. For non professionals I think driving by ear is the way to go.

I also don't really support the use of an OBD2 based app or device for this because of the inherent delay compared to an actual shift light. In the case of our cars with tach info being sent over CAN you will need to contact MSD to see what they recommend. I know they used to be able to reconfigure their gear for 1 cylinder operation for CAN based tach's.

If you are gonna track the car, get a trans oil temp gauge!

The OBD2 protocol used on pre-2007 cars is too slow to trust for something like a rpm meter. You need to use something that works off Nissan's Consult II protocol since that refresh rate is so much faster.

Newer cars (Consult III) support diag-on-CAN OBD2 protocol and have much faster refresh rates.
