Engine Being Replaced

It looks like after months of complaining about excessive oil consumption we might be getting the engine replaced on our G. We have been battling the dealership and Infiniti for the last 9 months on the oil consumption. The dealership finally agreed to monitor the consumption and told us that anything more than 1.5 quarts every 3380 miles was excessive. 1.5 seems excessive to me, but I do understand that Nissan engines do burn more oil than other makes. At 3200 miles the G had burned more than 2 quarts of oil. Infiniti has requested that the dealership complete three test before the engine is replaced. They are going to complete a compression test, pvc valve test(check to see if there is oil in the pvc valve), and a leak test. I am not sure how the pvc valve works and the service manager confirmed that he has never heard of a leak test before. The G goes back the dealer on the 7th for the tests. They said it would take about a week to have the engine delivered and then another 3 days to install.

Wow, a 9 month battle. You stuck to your guns and looks like it's paying off. I guess this is good for others with the problem also. The more people that get the engine the easier it is for others who come later. Infiniti cut lots of corners to bring this car in at a decent price. You never cut corners on an engine though. It's the heart of the car.

The test in question is almost certainly a leakdown test, and if he has never heard of this before then he has no right to be called a service manager -- a service writer, perhaps, but not a service manager. A competent service manager would most definitely know what a leakdown test is.

I always wondered that for those with excessive oil consumption, is it a problem that started from when the car was new, or can you go 30,000 or whatever miles without the problem, then it suddenly becomes an issue?

Whenever I check my oil, it is always on H. I have 20,000 miles on my '04 6MT now.

3 days to install reallt means 2 day to do nothing and say that it is a real pain and 1 day to actually do something

I can't believe they gave you such a hard time when this is a known problem with these engines. Congrats and good job sticking to your guns.

That's good to hear they call 1.5qts/3380mi (=1qt/2250mi. excessive).
I've been told by my Dealer and read in other threads, Nissan/Infiniti won't replace your engine until it's consuming more than 1qt/1000mi.

Keep us posted if they actually approve replacement, being your consumption is currently at 2qt+/3200mi, and what the tests showed.
I'm at 1qt/1500mi myself. Was at 1qt/1200. Big improvement huh?...lol
Thanks.

The short block attempt failed. A long block was installed in February. After 1000 miles the oil pump failed and leaked several quarts of oil all over a friend's driveway. Infiniti has agreed to buy the G back, but we have decided to go to arbitration because they want the mileage to be effective at 19K miles and we feel that it should be 8k which is when we originally brought the issue to their attention. Arbitration is this Friday.

Good luck with the arbitration. I have just started down the "oil consumption road". Started at about 35K miles. Currently @ 41K miles and going through the process of having the dealership do the oil changes and monitor the level. I hope I have an easier time getting it taken care of than you have!

What did Arbitration say on this issue? I'm at 8000 miles now, and I'm adding a QT ever 900ish mile (3 tanks of gas).

I have never added oil to my G. (04 6MT). I check my oil after they changeit (to make sure it's light brown, not black). I check it every 1000 Mi or so in between. By the time I am due for another oil change (+3,000 mi), my oil shows up halfway between HI & LO on the dipstick.

I use dino oil. My car is bone stock. Just an alternate data pont.

Excessive Oil Consumption........?
This seems to be a problem with the '05 but mostly '06 G35s. Has anyone
admited what the problem is? It has to be something to do with the rings
not seating.......I can only immagine what this has cost Nissan. After 9 mo.
waiting for Infiniti to get their head out I would have made sure the engine
failed so they would have had to replace it.
