Why is there oil on intake cylinder wall?

When I was installing my copper MD spacer, I noticed the second cylinder has oil on the walls but none of the others have it, anybody have any idea why?
Thanks

this is bad. engine folk will tell you exactly what it is but i believe its either a bad gasket or piston (sorry if i got it wrong). You should have it checked immediately regardless. If you've caught it in time, your lucky. I haven't heard of anyone catching this in time though.

What year is your car and how long have you had it?

read this as it may apply :)

Ahhh ha ha. LOL. Are you guys kidding me. ROFL. :bowrofl:

Those are your intake runners, not your cylinders. You cannot see inside the cylinders, at least without taking out the spark plug and using a little camera! If you look down the runners with a flashlight, you CAN see the intake valves. Pretty cool to poke around there - just don't drop anything small!

And you're fine. Shoot us a pic of your intake manifold. I'll bet the center section of the lower collector (under the brass panel) is filled with oil. It's just blow by from the PCV system. You can put a catch can between your PCV valve and intake manifold - look at the "catch can DIY thread". That back runner (2nd from last) leads to cylinder #5 by the way, not #2.

Thanks, I didn't know what number cyclinder it was or what to call it, it was like 1 am when I was installing the spacer. I'll try to take a pic of the intake manifold this weekend.

ohh its an 03 coupe!

sliderg35 03-02-2009 10:46 AM

OK, so why does #5 have more residue than the other cylinders?

That's a reasonable question and you could consider blow by back through the intake valves but I find that highly unlikely as you would have to have reversion of air flow back up past the intake valves.

More than likely it is from the PCV system. There are little holes in the lower collector for PCV vacuum. Once you remove the brass panel, you'll see how the oil pools in there. It's not exactly a flat surface - oil will puddle unevenly depending on various factors (airflow to the cylinders, parking on an incline, etc).

I would say its coming from the PCV hose connected to your intake system. Looks normal to me.

Hi-TechG35 03-02-2009 12:17 PM

Your fine just a little oil blow by. Nothing to worry about.

See thread about using Sea Foam. It will clean it out.

LMAO +1 what is this... an inline 6...sorta? lol!

No one has ever seen the Kinetics plenum installed? Sheesh.

use an oil catch can.

I wouldnt use a catch can. What goes through a PCV hose is at least somewhat of an upper cyl lubricant. OP, i wouldnt worry about it if I were you. Just do a simple check and look at your dipstick and check it a few days later to see if you are consuming oil. If not, you have nothing to worry about.
