Throttle body cleaning
 

Okay, I've got the stalling issue immediately after starting because I replaced my battery. After reading thread after thread related to this issue, it's no doubt that I have to clean my Throttle Body.

I plan to keep the TB on the car because some posters have stated that they were able to resolve their stalling issue without removing the TB. I understand there have also been big problems after moving the TB plate/butterfly within the TB.

So my question is this: Will it be okay for me to move the throttle plate/butterfly in the TB as long as I disconnect both the battery AND the TB plug?

Or do I need to keep the TB plug plugged in and just disconnect the battery?

I know it's drive by wire and I don't feel like messing with any resets and I also know some owners say don't move the throttle plate/butterfly. But I don't see how the TB can be thoroughly cleaned without moving it. Thanks

Unplug battery first. Then unplug the TB plug.

Be gentle with moving the butterfly valve.

I had a similar issue a few weeks ago when i disconnected my battery. Cold start was fine. Hot start - the car would fire up but die immediately unless I gave it gas. After a few blips of the throttle it would idle fine. Once running the car would have a stable idle until I swtched it off and restarted.

After a few days of driving it has sorted itself out and I have had a stable idle and no stalling issues for about 2 weeks. If you do want to tackle the problem I would suggest trying out the throttle relearning procedures before you attempt to clean the throttle body.

Well, it took care of the problem - as I knew it would judging from the amount of owners who resolved their issues. I ended up leaving the TB on the car, disconnected the negative terminal, then the TB plug. It was pretty dirty on the other side of the throttle plate.... and yes, I did move it... a lot!

Was a bit nervous after I was done, rpms were hanging around 1300. I just let it run without touching the accelerator and it came back down to normal within 5 minutes. Thanks for the clarification.

I've gone through all this and reset the TB and I still can get my RPM to idle below 1200 in park...in Drive it bumps down to about 900.?????

did you do the idle air volume relearn? if not, you need to do that. If yes, how long did you wait for the idle to drop down after warming up fully?

I did the idle air relearn about 3x and let it run/Idle for 30+ minutes. WHile driving it was kinda ok, but when I went to stop the rpms would blip up. I ended up taking it to the dealership and they said they see this problem most often when people try to clean the back side of the TB (the back side of mine after 136k was DIRTY) - 15 minutes on a computer and $90.00 later I was done. Expensive lesson

Be careful when cleaning the TB with it still on the car. Do NOT spray any cleaned on directly into the TB, on the plate imo b/c if any sludge/gunk blows off and gets into your combustion chamber it will stick on pistons and raise your compression and possible detonation. Also, be careful, as sensors are sensitive.

I was going to clean my TB, but ended up buying a new remanufactured throttle body for ~$200. Technically its a non-serviceable it oem, but many clean it themselves. However, the sensors tend to go out of sync over time, in addition to build-up.

I completely removed mine and cleaned it. No issue afterwards and even did an ECU reset. I have 86k and it was a little dirty.

Do you notice a difference in the idle after cleaning it?

Idle seemed to be better afterwards. I almost port and polished it to just for grins!
