1st Gear high RPM's
Hey guys, i am the owner of a 2003 g35 coupe 6mt with 150k KM's on it. When i start in first gear there doesn't appear to be any slippage, but i think that it may rev higher than what it should. The car will pull no problem and speed up but the rev's are probably 3000 at around 20 km/hr and will rev high if i put the gas on. I don't know if this is a problem because all the other gears seem to be fine.
What you think? |
At 12mph you're at 3000 RPMs? Doesn't really seem too far off...
I assume you have a 6MT - The clutch will be slipping if you press on the gas and the RPMs jump up without the car going anywhere and the RPMs may hang around at like 5000-6000 while it tries to grab. The final drive in the rear end determines what RPM is related to speed. |
Thanks for replying!
Cool i hope nothings wrong, the reason i got panicky i was reading somewhere online that said if you have high rpm's in first gear this might suggest tranny replacement:( I also noticed that while in first gear the car is very sensitive to throttle play, ie: acceleration or deccelaration but i think that is to be expected in first... What would be the signs of a tranny gone bad? I have owned this vehicle for about 5 months and never get tired of driving it the exhaust note is awesome. |
3Krmp at 12mph??? wtf? :icon43:
you can practically idle 12 mph |
3000K rpms seems high to me. 5AT but first gear tops out at around 38 MPH for me I think (3.53 FD)

Yeah... hmmm, i'm doing research and coming accros many symptons my tranny is experiencing... like i grind coming into third sometimes it's not bad yet but i have a feeling something is wrong with this transmission... This is not good!
I was just going to buy some 20' vs xx for this. It looks like i will be preparing this car for sale... i might lose $1000 or $1500... What do you think how much is a tranny replacement and is it really worth it? |
buy a used one from the marketplace and install it yourself. :)
