primary timing chain alignment question
 

so, doing a full vq35de na build and am at the timing part of building. we are a little confused on the following



so was working on the engine today some. everything was going good but when we went to put the primary timing chain on, it looks like we are one tooth off.

here is the problem

but when we routed the chain around the guides and water pump, there seemed to be too much slack on the water pump side instead of the chain tensioner side.

when we put the slack on the tensioner side, then the crank sproket and primary chain were one tooth off, even though the crank pulley key is facing up toward the bank 2 head and aligned with the marking on the block.

any ideas? could it have something to do with the intake sprockets being slightely off? the chain is new and we put it up next to the stock chain that come off this block and all the colored markings lined up the same. it just seems that with the slack on the water pump side, that things will get out of time as soon as things start spinning. any help is appreciated.

so i went ahead and just bolted everything up with all camshaft timing marks all lined up, but the crankshaft timing chain mark was one tooth off and this is how it looks:

if i move the slack in the chain over to the water pump side so the crank sprocket mark lines up with the chain, then i cant get the chain tensioner guide in there because its too tight.

Since the FSM states to adjust the cams slightly to make alignment marks fit I think you are ok to adjust the cams or essentially the crank a slight amt to make it fit....so long as everything else in timing is matching it should be good. Double check to make sure all the secondary marks are right.

Can you put a degree wheel on the crank and measure the IN/EX cam timing on both sides to see if they are correct and the same? Should be able to measure lobe center angles at least and get a good idea. You could also verify that the TDC mark on the crank pulley is correct.

Was much milled off the heads?

It might be fine, but if the cam timing is advanced or retarted across the board you may not make optimum power and you may bend valves.

Yeah, were the heads planed/milled?
When I engine blew the head gasket, both heads and decks warped. After sanding them flat I ended up with a lot less material. When putting the chain back on with cams/crank in position, the coloured links would not match up. I just set the chain on whichever marks they landed (one off on left bank, two off on crank) and that worked fine. When I had the engine running I got a code for over advanced timing which could probably be dialed out with the camshaft sprockets.

Make sure to rotate the engine and check everything clears.

How tight should the chain be on the top chain guide? Mine is pretty damn tight should it be that way?

Im having the same timing chain issue and wondering what your turn out was? I put it factory on all Mark's but still no crank. And which is real TDC mark the one on mother or the one on face of motor that you line the harmonic balancer to. Need help

How did you finally fix the issue and hows is the car running. Having same issue and can't get it going

Does it crank at all? When I did my chain, I just lined up all the links and put cylinder 1 at TDC. Been running fine for several years now.

Nope dose not I put all Mark's where they should be and no crank if I put them off mark it will crank

Are you SURE the crank didn't slip off of TDC 1 ?

Yes I even turn the motor 3 different time and all Mark's lined up. Every 360 degrees the Mark's were on spot. But like I said I can put the Mark's on the crank a notch off and it would crank. Don't make any sense
