LS1 CD009 fitment question(Sorry, I'm that guy)
 
Hello everyone,


I am wondering if anyone is has experience with an LS swap into a G/Z, but instead of using a t56, is running a factory CD009 trans with a COLLINS adapter. I want to go this route so I can keep the factory shift location and factory driveshaft. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

When I briefly considered/researched an LS swap, my concern was the CD009 gear ratios with the LS engine. CD009 would keep the revs very high for a V8 (3k rpms on the highway is overkill and pretty noisy). It could be helped a little with a 3.3FD from an auto G. High rpms might be good for track use, but didn't really seem like a good idea for a DD/street car.

Sorry, don't know anything about the various adapters. Just something to consider when weighing the pro & cons of CD009 vs T56 trans.

That is a good point. I plan on keeping it on the track, other than the occasional weekend drive. One of the reasons I want to consider the cd009 is cost to replace. If I blow a t56, that's a lot of money to fix. A CD009 is much cheaper.

Did you happen to look into putting different gears into the rear end? I believe certain years of G35 had 3.23 gears. This should put your cruising RPM a little closer to where it should be. I'm not the best at understanding final gear but I think I'm right about this.

none ever had that gear ratio. Automatics had 3.3, 6mt G35 had 3.5, 6mt G37 had 3.69
There's gear calculators online, from what I remember the ratios in the CD009 trans would have me shifting way too often with a V8, even with 3.3 rear end. Again, might be good rpm range for a track car, not so much for a daily driver in my opinion.

Dammit. Yeah I want to build something I can put serious miles on. Not doing that @3k on a 5.3.

3.133 Pathfinder sounds like a viable option. Looking into it further.

Sorry I keep pestering you but I've found stranger's perspectives to almost always be more helpful than just my own research.

This website has the best calculator I've found, plus it already has trans gear ratios for many trans saved in the drop down menus. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Ignore steps 2 & 3 since you're not offroading, but can give you an idea of redline and cruising rpms/speeds for different trans and final drive changes.


The Nissan CD009 is technically the "Nissan FS6R31A" trans. Comparing to the Tremec T56 can highlight the major differences, T56 has 2 gears of overdrive for example. Nissan 6th is fairly close to the T56 5th gear.

Stock G35 rear is 3.538 for the calculations.

I ended up going with the T56 in the end. After more research, there was too much to change to justify sticking with the CD009 for my application.


The car runs and drives and I have taken it to the track for one drift day.


I am running the Auto 3.3 rear at the time and I do not recommend it for low speed drifts. I will be switching to my spare 3.54 to get my torque back.

Honestly at this point I'm just so on the fence I'm not sure what to do. I am considering buying another stock vq37 but getting taller gears to try and improve fuel economy because I drive 776 Miles one way to go to work every 2 weeks. I just feel like maybe if I was going to do a swap I should focus on my 76 Datsun that already has a 350 small block. Thanks again bud

What LS did you drop in the G? Love the LS2 in my GTO with the T56, together they produce some serious magic.

LS line has been amazing the last 20 years. I was in love with my 96 LT1 car before the LS but technology in the 2014+ LT1 and LT4 with direct injection, etc is phenomenal but Chevy has finally came around and started building a DOHC. Yep a DOHC and also a twin turbo version. Both will be released in something in 2018 years. Kinda off topic but kinda on topic
