05x engine noise (pulley?)
I can’t figure this noise out, nobody can. Taken it to 2 shops. Sounds like the fan pulley, if I stick a screw driver to the fan pulley bracket it’s loud. It can also be heard through the PS pulley bracket but not as loud. Is this a pulley or a timing chain noise?
Car has 300k kms on it, seems to be running fine. It doesn’t make this noise in the morning when it’s cold, and it is much worse after idling for a while. If i leave the car idling for let’s say 20 mins, (engine already warm) , jump in and drive it makes that noise during acceleration, around 1500-2000rpm. Doesn’t sound like knocking, doesn’t tap, it doesn’t get louder with higher RPM. PLEASE HELP ITS DRIVING ME NUTS edit: it’s been doing this for over 4 months lol |
Definitely sounds like a pulley, easy to diagnose too. Remove the drive belt, spin pulleys by hand, if they make a sound like they have sand in them then they're shot. There should be NO NOISE when you turn them.
My guess is it's the idler / adjustment pulleys, they are a common failure item with that many miles on it. If you want to know what a new one sounds like go down to any parts house and ask to see one off them shelf for any make/model and spin it by hand. |

Not necessarily, it might have just enough grease left it in that it doesn't make much noise when cold but as soon as it's heated up to temperature it starts making noise when the grease is thin and not providing proper lubrication.
