G35/37 turbo'd/sc still reliable?

hi everyone,

I am new here and just wanted to ask a question. Before I ask I would like to say I used the search and FAQ but couldn't find much. And I read through the sticky about the turbo g owners but that only gave me a few ideas,

How is the reliablity of your turbo/sc g? Besides the regular maintenance, any extra work that needed to be done or "emergency"?

I plan on getting the greddy single turbo kit (I heard they make the turbos to work in compliance with everything stock) and just wanted an outlook on everyone.

Thanks in advance!

There isn't a Greddy single kit.

Go to my350z and check out the Forced Induction thread over there.

STS has been out for a year and to date I don't know anyone who had any major problem with the kit. I'm very surprised how reliable this kit especially for a new one. I have about close to 9K+ miles and 10 months and the only maintenance I have done is change my Oil. Some have close to 20K miles problem free.

depends who installs and tunes the vehicle. The general rule is whenever you go FI, you enter into a realm of unprecedented risks of breakdown and/or general problems.

thanks everyone for the replies!

As for the tune and install, I plan on going to a professional shop for install/tune.

And as far as reliability, I am a guy who would have that over power. Hence this thread :) I hope to hear from everyone!

my g is not reliable at all. Its not even the FI kits that cause problems. Its the random other things associated with goin FI.

Case in point, running all those wires thru the grommet led to water leaking in the car and on top of the ECU's.

Cog belt fraying and stripping/ shorting the IVT solenoid

Bad bearing the in the blower

Bypass valve valving causing boost leak

These might be a 1 in a million chance, but sucks when you are that 1. Sucks even worse if its your daily driver.

Having a shop do all the would prevent a lot of newbie problems with teh install, but you cant beat bad luck.

Alot of people make this mistake. There is a professional shop down the street from me. Does that mean I will have them install my F/I kit that I paid ~$10,000 for? I don't think so. If I ever do F/I with a G I will only go to Forged Performance, GTM, Performance factory, and VTR (VinnyTenRacing). That is all, I don't care what you say. I did my homework and that is it. Plus, I live up in Philly, NONE of those shops are near me. Is it worth it? Hell Yea(In my eyes).

Remember ANYONE can do a great job, but it takes someone special to fix a screw up.

/\ Why is MRC not on your list? They are the most closest to you. Unless you have a Beef with Julian then I would put him on the list. I will only go to a shop that actually know how to tune... Just my .02

Never said they were out of the question. I just have not looked into them. But now I am as we speak. I am pick about spending money, only the best will touch my stuff. MRC does look good though!

I got mine tune at Church, truth is my Utec wasn't grounded, GTM doesn't even know how Church tuned my car, he only used 30% of my Utec Map and didn't tell me nothing, said I'm good to go but in reality I was detonating!!! Church fvcked up my friends evo and did a poor tune on a s2000 too, they just tune it how the car arrives, even if the car's about to blow, the'll just tune it and take your money hahahah. So basically I got hustled! So I learned it the hard way! In my opinion you want the most reliable and easy to fix, get Stillen, pussiest supercharger on the market, not much power but you can punch it all day and have fun!

In your case I think you are that .01% that has bad luck. I have no problem with church as doesnt many others. Maybe you didnt take control and let him run all over you? Who knows. It's your product, make them work for you, not the other way around. Sorry to hear that man.

+1 had a "professional shop" in Houston do my install and tune... ended up at SGP Racing a few weeks later needing major help. They worked everything out great.

Reliabilty and power are all in the tuner. So spend the extra bucks in the beginning. I had to pay 2k more than I should have...

Hexxum001 Mar 6, 2008 07:11 PM

To the OP-Don't let the "haters" out there deter you from doing it the right way. I went to GTM right off of the bat and their knowledge and professionalism is one of the best in the nation. Some people talked ****, behind my back because they didn't have the balls to do it to my face, because of the amount of $$ that I spent at GTM. But guess what, as soon as I had a problem (defective Vortech SC not anything that GTM did) Sam and GTM stepped up and said they would take care of it all free of charge (including labor) because they did all of the work on my car. Are shops like GTM and others mentioned pricey?? Hell yeah, but it was and is worth every penny to get it done right the first time. No other shop will ever touch my car when it comes to performance as long as I have a G. ;)

HomieG35; what shop in houston did you go to? i was thinking enginelogics for future install.

thanks again for all the info/help everyone. so lets say i get someone who knows what they are doing and does a perfect job, as far as the car being reliable, how would that turn out?

str8dum1 Mar 6, 2008 07:53 PM

the kit can be reliable. but there are other factors.

i think a turbo would lend itself to being much more relaible. You arent strapping a big load onto the motor with belts that can break and are tensioned so tight as they can severly wear bearings in the water pump and alternator.

although, if something goes wrong with a SC, just unhook the cog belt and off you go. Cant really do that is a turbo takes a dump on ya.

either way, AAA gold with 100 mile free towing is not a bad option. I know I use it all the time :)

Never heard too many big things out of them as far as the Nissan realm. They may be OK at the install, but I'd stick to one of the shops that regularly do G35's and 350Z's for the tuning. If you are in Houston, or if it's closest to you, SGP should be able to satisfy you. They are a bit more pricey, like the other big names, but I've had them step up to the plate many many many times to fix things that hae gone wrong with the car. Infact, I'll be down in Houston Monday at SGP. Lemme know if you feel like meeting up!
