My long overdue Greddy TT makeover by Forged Performance

A little background first. I had the Greddy TT kit put on my car way back in 1/05 when the car had 10k miles on it (If anyone knows any that are older in FL please let me know, I think I may be one of the first to do so). The work was done by a Supra specialist in Orlando because there weren't many real VQ experts around then. At the time there was not terribly much known about the cars and the kits. I now have 43k miles on the car and I guess I have been one of the "lucky" ones who have been driving their car around on the Greddy kit for this long without any issues, especially with the factory plug and play E-manage blue tune and FI restrictive Evo2 exhaust. I had never had any problems with my car but had refused to ever take it to the strip or any auto cross events for fear that something would happen since everyone loves to hate on the Greddy kit straight out of the box, which is essentially what I had. I was happy with the car for about a year or so but then became incredibly bored and was half heartedly looking to get rid of it for a long time if something more exciting came along because the car no longer got my mojo going and was severly overrated. I was tired of losing bad to M3s or any other supposedly similarly matched cars in any type of impromptu spirited driving situations.

Back to the now. I had been researching what to do to get my car up to the 400rwhp benchmark for awhile and where I would get my work done. I decided on going to Forged Performance after talking on the phone and exchanging PMs with Sharif. He gave me plenty of advice and answered any questions I had on the particular parts/setups we came up with instead of just telling me to street race someones car that he worked on as justification for his work. He was extremely helpful and did not try to pressure me into buying any parts from him if I was able to find anything used at a cheaper price. He also price matched or beat any prices on any other new parts that I needed. However, the most important thing for me was that he was willing to work around my schedule since being in school and from out of town it would be a PITA to have my car out of commission for very long in a foreign city. Upon arriving at the shop it was like being in a Nissan wet dream with all the cars that were there. It is no coincidence that 1/3 of the cars at the shop had out of state tags or were even flying other shops banners on the windshield. Some places are just worth going to, you might as well go there the first time and have things done the right way.

The good stuff. We decided on going with the UTEC (with map sensor, switch, and boost control solenoid) SVRT wastegate relocaters and open dumps, SGP 3" downpipes, CJM fuel return, Walbro fuel pump, NGK plugs, and the Greddy Ti-C dual exhaust. After taking off my now obsolete parts for my application some imperfections in my setup were noticed. Mostly the fact that one of the bolts was broken during my original install on my passenger side turbo which had been causing a boost leak since it did not allign properly with the stock downpe. Also most of the lines and hoses were re-run and cleaned up. The 2.75-2.5" bottle neck was cut out and a new larger pipe was perfectly welded in its place giving a clean looking and more free flowing exhaust. After everything was installed the car finally hit the dyno, which is the event I most wanted to see. I wanted a high and a low boost setting and Sharif set me up with essentially 350 @6psi and 400 @8psi. Hearing the car on the dyno was impressive but still did not do it justice compared to what it sounds like or feels like on the road. The first night I got the car back I scared the crap out of myelf so bad as soon as the wastegates opened up and the car started roar that I let off on the throttle because the sound was simply ridiculous (but in a good way). That first night I didn't even try out the higer boost setting because I was impressed enough with the lower one, and this was with the car filled with my luggage, old car parts, a buddy in the passenger seat, plus his luggage.

Everyone at the shop was extremely nice and didn't mind me hanging out literally all day every day since I did't really have anywhere else to go. Sandy was an extremely gracious host, Dylan did an awesome job on all the installations, and Sharif tuned the car exactly how I wanted it. I didn't know how "bad" the car drove before, and I'm not even talking about WOT runs. Just the everyday driveability of it is so much more enhanced, such as being able to have partial throttle revs of higher than 3k without the car falling on its face. Oh yeah, one more thing thats important in these times of liquid gold type gas prices, I got 60+ more miles to the tank on the highway as well (including several not so gas friendly driving manuvers). So my end result was positive across the board: more power, safer tune, better sound, as well as better gas mileage.

On the drive home some styrofoam hose looking stuff mangaged to blow infront of the car and of course stick to my brand new exhaust so I had to pull over and pick it off  .

Awesome car. I wish I had the means to do that to mine. I love how you were on the lift next to the black skyline.

Nice ride. So you've been FI'd since 05 with no problems?

RobDiesel22 05-14-2008 03:54 PM

how much $ more or less would you say to run a similar set-up..
(wondering whats the price range)

Nice #'s but why is your A/F in the 12's? Are you running race gas or Meth?

That's correct. No problems that affected the general drivability except being too slow. I guess you could consider the boost leak an issue though.

I guess that would depend on if you mean the redoing of everything or if it was done as the only installation.

I guess I should have put a little note on that. Thats not a picture from my final pull. I have the printout from the final and completed tune but my scanner is not cooperating. I just happened to have a picture on my camera that was from what I recall was the 2nd or 3rd pull at 8psi. So no special potions, just 93 octane.

Ok, I would assume that Sharif will tune starting from the Rich side first and maybe start leaning it to squeeze more power, not the other way around. Anyways good #.
