Is my milage too high for a turbo/supercharger?

I'm not exactly a gearhead or anything like that so excuse this potentially dumb question. My sedan has about 104k miles and the thought of a turbo is pretty awesome. Is 104k too much for a turbo or a supercharger?

It's never too high. I don't have one but if you take take care of it it shouldnt manner.

You realize of course that "thought" will cost you between 5-10 grand... right?

RockyR87 02-18-2013 07:29 PM

Yeah I've looked. It's a good ways down the road. Just wanted to know if mileage would ever be an issue

Any consumption issues? Are you an AT or one of the rare 6MT sedans? The difference would be in the Rev up or Non-revup.

AT is also good and bad. Good because it keeps your goals reasonable- bad because if you plan up upgrading it, it can cost a small fortune.

MT is less expensive and allows for "better" power management- but can quickly result in getting in too deep because you keep wanting (and getting) MOAR!

You'd want to do a leak down test to help verify if the block is "tight" enough for boost- even low amounts. Reasonable gains can be achieved for reasonable costs... depending on what upgrades you've already performed to the car. However a blown motor is a blown motor- whatever your intention- to have to go through the expense of replacing an engine for a meagre 150hp or so... suddenly you end up spending 10-15k and you still have a car with 105k + miles on it.

RockyR87 02-18-2013 07:56 PM

I'm on a 5AT. What do you mean by consumption?

Eno 02-18-2013 07:58 PM

You won't need to worry about it if you're an AT... so disregard that part.

RockyR87 02-18-2013 08:06 PM

Alright. I haven't had a chance to do a whole lot of upgrades yet, but I'm thinking about upgrading my exhaust and getting a spacer here in the next couple of weeks.

Best bet is to buy a stage 1 short block..

jomamahama 02-19-2013 07:14 AM

How many miles do you put on a year? (if 15K+ might as well wait for the engine to blow)
Are you the first owner or do you know how the first owner took care of the engine? (this is important for longevity)
Have you had to add oil between normal changes?

If there is nothing scary about the above info, then I'd then get a compression and leak down test done and shoot for modest goals (375-400 whp)

If you are going to go turbo at that mileage it wouldn't hurt to regasket your engine and change to ARP bolts. Gaskets and bolts are cheap its just tearing into the engine that costs the money and time.
