Mods/Car Longevity

My friends keep getting on my back because I want to mod my car. Will aftermarket parts like a pop charger / ztube and like spacers affect the life of your car just becuase theyre aftermarket? My friend says that because they're not made with the car they might hurt the life of it. Is there any truth to this?

You should be fine with the mods you listed

Simple mods such as an intake, headers, test pipes, spacer, ground kit, exhaust will not effect the life of your car. It's when you start forcing the engine to do things it isn't really tuned for such as forced induction, advancing the timing for example is when you shorten the cars lifespan.

If anything i would say that breathing mods and what not will help prolong the life of your car. Depending on how many miles you have on the car as well. Off with the old - On with the new. New parts = less ware then that means less ware = longer life.

Now if you start making the engine do things it doesnt want to (supercharger/ turbocharger) its going to kill the motor faster. Personally id rather have NA monster any day of the week.

general rule is if you increase the power, you'll decrease your car's (all of its parts, since they all work together when you drive) longevity. As for a Ztube, which gives no gains, and a pop charger, which maybe will give you 2 hp, you'll be fine. Having to deal with problems is part of modding/working on your car. Good luck with your decision.

My car has 64k and going strong. Almost 20k of those are boosted.

Mods may or may not harm your car's longevity. There are many differents ways and levels of modding. For example . . . Increasing your stock hp by some 200+ may be detrimental to some of your existing major components. One would have to consider if the existing engine, drivetrain, transmission, etc. configurations would be able to handle the extra power that the vehicle was not originally designed for and act accordingly.

In your case, with regard to the items, which you have mentioned, I seriously doubt that any harm would occur. Keep in mind though that when installing a bunch breathing mods, you should also keep an eye on your Air to Fuel Ratio . . . But as noted, you should be fine.

Happy modding and enjoy! ;)

Agreed. You'll be fine. And as far as FI goes, it really depends. There are people who beat on their NA cars constantly. I can't imagine that always good for the car.

Well as for FI you might want to consider that some manufactures are producing vehicles with superchargers, turbos and have warranties on them. If you go that route then tunning and not over doing it with will play a big part in making that engine last.
