So.. I got a new engine, and it's still consuming oil..
Here is the summary:
05 6MT. Bought the car new with 9miles on it. Problem started at 2k miles. 12k replaced the short block. Still consuming oil. Changed long block at about 22k. At 26 k miles now with the new engine, barely any oil on the dipstick, and I'm getting valve train rattle. Exactly like when the problem started at 2k miles. I don't abuse my car. I push every now and then.. That's what it's built for. Nothing out of the ordinary. Work at home.. so sometimes the car will sit for 2 days without being driven. Now, I have to start on yet another series of oil consumption tests. I'm at my mthoerfuking wit's end people.. I haven't modded this car for almost 2 years because of this sh!t. |
Time to lemon law that puppy. Seriously.

I think you might be right.

Def lemon law it. I just got my engine replaced becuase of oil consumption issues also. Only 500 miles on it now, I just hope its fixed but I doubt this new shortblock is any better than the one they replaced.

Wow. This is not good to hear. I just dropped my G off to get the engine replaced. They are giving me a new long block and supposedly the new engine has a new revised set of piston rings that should solve the problem. Anyone getting their engine replaced, definitely insist on getting a long block. All I can say is that if my G continues to consume oil AFTER getting the engine replaced, it won't be long before I am driving a new vehicle (probably a 335 :D).

How are you driving while breaking these engines in? It's unbelievable to get 2 bad engines in a row!
You need to seat the rings in a new engine; this is the key to most oil consumption problems later... If the rings do not properly seat and oil begins to get past them and burn, it will never stop. I have a way I break in all my new cars and have built many Japanese and American engines in the past and have always seated rings etc. the old way; hard. New cars: the first 5000 miles get many revs to at least 3K and then let off; even while cruising the highway... I also down shift always for that first 3K to seat rings. For the next 2K, I drive pretty hard, not too many red line revs, but a few do work well and I also let the car decelerate from redline a few times. If you do not break in the engine roughly enough, the rings will never properly seat and it will burn oil. Sometimes it is not the engine but the way it was broken in. |
htown, I broke the car in by the book the first time, i.e. don't go over 4k rpm for 1200 miles. For this second engine, against my judgement btw, Infiniti told me not to go above 3k RPMS for the first thousand miles. I even brought it up on these forums if I should break it in hard or just follow the rules Infiniti gave me. I decided to do the latter, because I didn't want to give Infiniti any leeway to blame me if the car started to have trouble again.
I'm seriously starting to think that the car can't handle me. I don't get it. I have my redline indicator set to 6800. So it's not like I'm taking the damn thing past redline when I do punch it. I don't even drive the car every day. And the 5 days out of the week I do drive it, maybe one day in that week.. like on the weekend, I push the car hard, just for some fun. Because it's supposed to be a sports car engine right? I'm allowed to have fun with this car right Infiniti? Maybe this has something to do with how long the car sits. I'm clueless. But at this point I could care less. I just want justice. |
Oh btw, I test drove the 335i last week for the second time in 2 months. This time I really got to drive it. The engine.. flawless. And the car is so well balanced. I even appreciated the looks of the car more after I drove it this time. Really had me thinking hard about ordering a montego blue one. Really leaning towards bmw. Want to wait for the new M3 also.

ghost30-It has nothing to do with the way the engine is broken in. It's the luck of the draw with the 6MT Revup engines. I broke the engines of both of my G's in the exact same way. By the book. My 2005 6MT G coupe had absolutely no oil consumption issues and my 06 6MT G coupe burns 1 1/2 - 2 quarts every 1000 miles. Infiniti says that the issue is the piston rings. My new long block is going to include new, revised piston rings that they think should solve the problem. The QC guy at the dealership said to break the engine in by the book. To do otherwise would void your warranty. And from what he said, all they have to do is plug into your ECU and they can see how you have been driving the vehicle. As much as I have been going back and forth with the dealer/Infiniti, I would do it by the book.
BTW, if things don't work out, I will be test driving the 335 ASAP! :drivingskid: |
hahaha I doubt it will tell them how your driving, Ill ask some people I know that turbo swap engines...Im pretty sure that a neg. I think they were just trying to scare you
