My DG hood's paint?
 

My hood's paint was perfect before, and now it slowly started doing this. Looks like scrape marks. First the big one showed up, and now they're slowing showing up all over the hood. Any idea what this is? I'm thinking of either repainting my DG hood but it will cost around $300-$500 or if I should just buy an aftermarket hood or a DG OEM hood already painted? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I live in San Diego, California by the way. Thanks!

Looks like your clear coat is failing. My guess is your car has lived a decent amount of it's life not covered by a garage or carport and probably for a time wasn't washed and waxed/polished or sealed correctly. Mine was taken care of from a maintenance standpoint but spent a large part of it's life outside and now with close to 140K miles is experiencing the same type of thing. The long streaks are kinda freaking me out though, looks like something intentionally scratched it. :dunno:

Yeah, it's never been in a garage. I've had it for 7 years. And the last 2 years, I bought a car cover for it, could that maybe cause this? I was scared at first because it looks like someone intentionally scraped it, but it's showing up everywhere now. I wash, wax, and detail my car a lot, that could also be the problem of washing off the clear coat. Anyway, I need a resolution. Anyone in So Cal have a suggestion? Thanks!

Careful with the car cover though..many times they cause small particles of dirt etc to be pushed across the car making matters worse

Agreed on the car cover, when the clear fails it gets dry and brittle and starts to flake, on my car it starts with small dots. Your streaking issue is probably caused by putting the cover on and taking it off. At this point I think it's doing more damage than protecting the paint. It's no secret our paint/clear is a crap, we all years ago made fun of the sticker a lot of us have/had in the engine bay that proudly proclaims "this paint is protected by Infiniti's hard clear coat" or something like that. What a joke.

Putting a cover on and taking it off on the daily is probably doing more harm than good, as they're mainly meant to stay on for longer periods of time so as to not disturb the paint. Also looks like it just wasn't polished/waxed regularly, which doesn't really help at all

You need it to be professionally repaired/repainted. There is no other way to fix it.

You might want to post that question in the SoCal sub-forum in the regional section. AFAIK it's still pretty active although I don't go there much.

Wrong :icon18: installing/removing a car cover will not damage your car or paint! Both my wife and I have used www.calcarcovers for years, it's done nothing except save our paint! Keeping your ride clean and waxing the painted surface at least once a year will help!
